JOB SUMMARY:

The Sr. Safety Manager is responsible for the management of the safety and health programs for York Building Products, York Materials Group, Chesapeake Minerals and Heritage Concrete Operations. This position oversees all required and in-house training programs as well as compliance with federal, state and local agency regulations such as OSHA, MSHA, and Department of Transportation (DOT). The Sr. Safety Manager is responsible for working closely with our operations management team to establish and maintain a strong safety culture amongst various locations and promoting a work environment that focuses on proactive measures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages a team of safety & health management professionals and ensures roles and responsibilities are clear and expectations are being met. Provides ongoing mentoring and coaching to staff and identifies areas of growth that will assist their development as a safety & health professional.

  • Develops and implements effective training programs relating to OSHA, MSHA, DOT and industry best practices.

  • Ensures that all essential and mandatory industry regulations are in place, that employees are trained in those regulations where necessary, and that ongoing compliance is being followed.

  • Conducts routine field safety audits to ensure compliance with company policies and federal, state, and local regulations. Works with field staff to develop and implement corrective action to address deficiencies.

  • Development and management of site-specific safety programs. Performs regular assessments of these programs to ensure their effectiveness and that loss trends are properly controlled.

  • Responsible for overseeing and coordinating on-site industrial hygiene surveys including but not limited to noise and air monitoring.

  • Ensures required MSHA and OSHA reporting documentation is completed accurately and timely.

  • Coordination of internal and external resources to effectively manage exposures associated with regulatory compliance, changes in operations, emergencies, and new risks.

  • Serves as liaison for any Federal Agency inspections (OSHA, MSHA) and is responsible for subsequent communications with Federal Agencies.

  • Oversees internal safety audits to monitor facility compliance and drive continuous improvement. Ensures all audit recommendations are properly communicated and their completion is properly documented. Routinely evaluates common trends and creates remediation plans to address them.

  • Communicates results of key safety metrics such as audit findings, claims, and training to operation leaders and the Director of EH&S as appropriate.

  • Routinely performs loss analysis to identify potential loss trends and works with operation leaders to develop appropriate strategies to mitigate potential loss exposures.

  • Coordinates accident/incident procedures for injured employees as well as overseeing root cause investigation procedures for accidents involving employees, automobiles, property, and equipment damage. Works closely with the internal Claim Administrator and Director of EH&S to ensure proper claim-handling procedures are being followed.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or a related field required.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively higher-level experience in the EHS function.

  • Extensive knowledge of and/or experience with the rules and regulations of federal and state safety laws including OSHA, MSHA, DOT and the EPA is required.

  • Experience with managing Worker’s Compensation, Automobile and General Liability claim administration a plus.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with employees at all levels of the business both verbally and in written form.

  • Must have strong presentation skills to effectively conduct training.

  • Advanced knowledge of analytical tools and other logistics software preferred (i.e. Netradyne, Samba Safety, Site Docs, data mining/reporting)

  • Ability to analyze, define, diagnose, and resolve problems based on sound logic and rationale.

  • Capability to lead and manage others in a matrix organization by interacting cooperatively and collaboratively with team members, including those holding opposing views and goals.

  • Valid driver’s license required.
