CVS Health Lead Director of Engineering - Pharmacy Technology, AI Chat Experience in Woonsocket, Rhode Island

Position Summary

The Lead Director of Engineering will lead the Pharmacy Technology - Conversational AI & Chat Experience value stream to support our Omni Rx Product roadmaps as well as support initiatives to grow our core business. The Lead Director will manage the day-to-day aspects of the engineering teams and mentor 35+ associates comprising of FTE and contractors working across different geographies to deliver our roadmap commitments. As Lead Director you will join forces with product and technology teams across our DDAT (Digital, Data, Analytics & Technology) organization to advance our technology strategy and deliver solutions for our internal and external stakeholders. You will also own people management, general guidance, and career mentorship aspects of the team including directing work assignments, influencing work estimates and timelines, customer communications, strategic planning, and demonstrating agile expertise with functional-technical-operational processes are some of the other key capabilities for this role. This leader is responsible to hire, mentor and coach diverse roles in agile teams such as Engineering Managers, Scrum masters, Development engineers, technical leads, and Software Development engineers in test, to support our bold agenda of transforming Pharmacy experience.

  • Technical leader for our Pharmacy Technology - Conversational AI & Chat Experience value stream who will lead, mentor, and grow a team of skilled and passionate software engineers

  • Responsible for all software engineering activities including software creation and maintenance

  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle with requirements, solution design, development, QA implementation, and product support using Scrum and other Agile methodologies

  • Responsible for assessment of software engineering practices and driving continuous improvement in engineering practices, operational efficiency, time to value and product quality

  • Maintain source-code repositories, drive code reviews, and conduct design and technical reviews

  • Identify new technologies that will benefit short- and long-term department goals

  • Participates in IT development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people

  • Developing and enhancing tools that allow us to accelerate what we are doing and build a platform that is sustainable with growth

  • Cultivate leadership within team (both tech leads and first level managers)

  • Building a team environment by partnering to solve problems and staying focused till there is a solution

  • Assist engineering teams in career growth and skill development through goal setting, coaching, and setting measurable professional goals

  • Provide thought leadership in the areas of strategy and technology

  • Building collaborative relationships with key partners by driving priorities aligned to value streams, influencing, and prioritizing product roadmaps, and gaining buy-in from executive leadership

  • Providing overall direction by analyzing organizational objectives and needs

  • Plan and allocate resources within defined budgets

  • Coordinate the plans and activities of the organization with senior leaders inside and outside IT

  • Apply technical and process expertise to address challenging technical and business issues

  • Has overall control of planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending and implementing changes to methods

  • Build relationship and partner with vendors to build contingent team working from both onshore and offshore locations to support our staffing needs

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of overall technology experience

  • 8+ years people leadership experience, with at least 5 years leading large teams of 30+

  • 5+ years working experience in Retail Pharmacy system or similar size systems in a fortune 100 company

  • 5 + years experience working with offshore teams

  • 5+ years experience working in Agile/Scrum setup

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience with Azure, GCP or other public cloud services, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), SaaS application development/support, CI/CD practices, containerization, Kubernetes, and Agile/DevOps methodologies

  • Strong technical proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python

  • Familiarity with React JS/Angular or other front-end frameworks; ability to develop effective engineering practices and processes

  • Extensive experience on Monolith to Microservices Migration

  • Extensive experience of the Cloud Native Development practices and 12 factor apps development

  • Extensive experience of Microservices Patterns (Eventual Consistency Pattern, Asynchronous event messaging, Anti -Corruption Layer, Adapter, Saga, Kappa design pattern)

  • Mastery of application, data, and infrastructure architecture disciplines

  • Command of architecture, design, and business processes

  • Knowledge of industry-wide technology trends and best practices

  • Keen understanding of financial control and budget management

  • Expertise in working in in large, collaborative teams to achieve organizational goal

  • Passionate about building an innovative culture

Education

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (High School Diploma and 4 years relevant experience)

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$144,200.00 - $288,400.00

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
