Description: PFAS Treatment in Private Wells - Intern MassDEP will be conducting PFAS testing for a limited number of private wells, focusing on the 85 Massachusetts towns where 60% or more of residents are served by private wells. Private wells are regulated by local Boards of Health, which are overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. MassDEP will work with these entities, other local partners, and MassDEP’s contractor, the University of Massachusetts (UMass), to select and provide for free sampling and analysis of selected private wells. This position will be with the Technical Support and Site Discovery section in BWSC's Northeast Regional Office in Woburn and include the evaluation of testing and treatment technologies for PFAS-contaminated private wells. Duties will include: * Evaluation of existing PFAS data from private wells, * Collection of water samples from private homes to supplement existing datasets * Summarization of technical documents and scientific articles that pertain to PFAS testing and treatment, particularly in private wells * Communication of findings internally, both in written reports and oral presentations * The intern will work with a team of three scientists and engineers, and the results of this study will be presented at a scientific conference in October. * There will also be opportunities for laboratory work and additional field work, which may include installation and sampling of groundwater wells for PFAS and/or other contaminants.
