D.A. Collins Companies Corporate Safety Director in Wilton, New York

The D.A. Collins Family of Companies has brought safety, quality, and productivity to industrial, infrastructure, highway and bridge construction for over 75 years and we are looking to add a Corporate Safety Director to our team.

The Safety Director is responsible for leading and managing the Company’s safety initiatives, safety loss control programs, and the further development of a safety and risk management culture dedicated to being “ best in class. ” The Director is expected to further develop the Company’s safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies and procedures to further build and enhance a safety culture dedicated to behaviors which will lead to “ best in class ” results.

Responsibilities:

Program Management:

o Be the lead for safety business planning efforts.

o Develop and implement company-wide safety and health strategies.

o Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability across all levels of the organization.

o Enforce client safety standards and management and executive expectations.

o Develop, implement, and monitor key performance indicators (KPI’s) to measure safety performance on projects and provide ongoing process modifications that will reduce and eliminate employee exposure to hazards.

o Provide technical and administrative direction on all safety and health policies and programs.

o Identify effective training opportunities given relevant observations and needs assessments.

o Oversee, develop, and enforce construction safety compliance with all regulatory agencies, including OSHA/MSHA/VOSHA.

o Maintain awareness of regulatory changes that could impact the company and work with company executives, management and legal to respond appropriately.

o Implement recommended post-accident safety measures and action plans.

o Act as lead company representative with regulatory bodies and other outside parties with respect to safety and occupational health matters.

o Collaborate and communicate with field operations teams to motivate and enhance worker safety practices.

o Provide ongoing feedback to improve company safety behaviors and achievement of safety and wellness goals.

Project Visits :

o Proactively visit all company project sites to assess and work with teams to improve safety outcomes and initiatives.

o Provide guidance on safety related certifications and qualifications required for specific job roles.

o Observe and monitor the work force for safety behaviors and coach and mentor employees on best-in-class practices.

o Coordinate with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.

o The majority of the director’s work time will be spent on projects sites primarily thoroughout NYS and VT and other project locations.

Safety Talent Development :

o Train and Mentor Site Safety Specialists.

o Look for industry leading opportunities to provide Safety department personnel ongoing training.

o Develop health and safety training materials, toolbox talks, 5-minute huddles, and presentations, etc. for operational teams.

Incident Management :

o Lead management of incidents and injuries.

o Ensure proper investigations are conducted and documented.

o Implement root cause analysis.

o Ensure proper reporting under applicable regulatory statutes.

o Coordinate with risk management/insurance.

Qualifications:

o Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, or a related field of study. Years of construction safety experience will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.

o Minimum of 10 years of experience managing safety programs on large scale construction projects.

o Demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of a safety program across multiple construction projects.

o OSHA/MSHA instructor certifications preferred.

o CSP or CHST preferred.

o In depth technical knowledge of construction related OSHA, MSHA, Federal, State, and local regulatory standards, hazard recognition, record keeping, and injury management.

o Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, in order to convey safety policies and procedures to employees and stakeholders at all levels.

o Experience managing internal staff and third-party consultants.

o Strong organizational and time management skills.

o Strong work ethic and passion– a desire and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done.

o Ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams to achieve program and project objectives.

o Must be self-motivated and proactive in identifying challenges, recommending solutions, and creating a road map and process for successful implementation.

o Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify potential hazards and recommend solutions.

  • Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide ranging weather conditions and environments.

  • Must be able to perform activities requiring use of arms and legs, including climbing ladders/scaffolds, lifting and handling materials up to 50 lbs., and walking both on hard surfaces and over uneven terrain.

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all stakeholders, executives, supervisors, employees in both one on one and in individually and in group settings.

  • Have a strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Base salary range:

Corporate Safety Director

$135,000-$185,000

Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as related work experience, market conditions, education/training, certifications and other credentials, overtime when applicable, as well as applicable knowledge and skills.
