Technical Manager
The DuPont Electronics and Industrial business (E&I) is a world leader in the electronic and industrial materials markets and consists of multiple highly profitable, high growth businesses servicing the semiconductor, consumer electronics, healthcare and printing industries. We are seeking a driven and experienced Technical Manager to join our Engineering Science and Technology (ES&T) organization. This role will lead the Applied Engineering team within ES&T and report to the Engineering Science and Technology Leader. This is a challenging and exciting opportunity to lead a high value team which helps multiple business deliver new products, application wins and manufacturing improvements.
The Applied Engineering Team provides specialized engineering expertise to all Electronics and Industrial businesses with the goal of advancing the execution of new product and application development programs and to improve the performance of E&I manufacturing assets. The competencies within the Applied Engineering Team include advanced mechanical, electrical and optical testing and simulation, experimental and computational material mechanics, mechanical and electrical material characterization and electromechanical system engineering and development. The team engages with E&I business teams in a variety of capacities including:
• Working with product development teams, applications teams and customers to understand how our materials perform and why, so that our products and/or customer designs can be tailored for commercial success.
• Development of new test methods and devices for material characterization and application specific testing.
• Working with manufacturing teams to understand the impact of process variables on material properties and/or develop improvements to existing processes and manufacturing systems.
• Development of first-of-a-kind equipment for automation of laboratory and manufacturing processes.
Projects range from small consultative efforts to multiyear programs with team members engaging at levels ranging from subject matter expert to program leader depending on project need and fit.
The Applied Engineering Technical Manager manages the operations of the Applied Engineering Team consisting of approximately 13 direct and 7 indirect reports and two DuPont Experimental Station laboratory facilities located in Wilmington, Delaware. These facilities include include mechanical and electrical testing laboratories as well as prototyping and fabrication shops. A Lab Supervisor who manages the detailed day-to-day lab operations and personnel reports to this role. The Applied Engineering Technical Manager is expected to maintain a working knowledge of all programs in which the team is engaged. These projects are identified and prioritized through proactive engagement with E&I R&D and Manufacturing Technology (MT) leaders. It is typical to have more than 20 simultaneously active projects and smaller engagements with multiple businesses. While most projects are directed by the businesses, this role is expected to maintain a level of hands-on engagement and awareness of all projects and provide guidance and support to team members to drive project success.
Key Role Responsibilities:

• Oversee day-to-day operations and be accountable for the safety performance of two Experimental Station laboratory facilities including multiple testing laboratories and fabrication / prototyping shops.
• Actively develop and manage the team project portfolio to ensure appropriate resource allocation and maximization of team value delivery.
• Identify and prioritize project opportunities through proactive interaction with business R&D and Manufacturing Technology leaders.
• Actively track team resource allocation and value delivery metrics for reporting to upper management.
• Develop and manage the team operating PO.
• Develop and execute strategic staffing and capital plans to maintain and build competencies, facilities and capacity to meet business needs.
• Identify, evaluate and implement new technologies and competencies required to meet business needs.
Role Requirements:
• BS or advanced degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering or Materials Science
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an R&D, application engineering or engineering technology environment with demonstrated success in product development, application engineering or electromechanical systems engineering.
• Minimum of 3 years’ direct supervisory experience of teams consisting of at least 5 people.
• Effective communication and influence skills
• Demonstrated ability to work well with colleagues across geographic regions and business functions
• Demonstrated knowledge of general laboratory operation and safety practices

• Experience managing in a fast-paced working environment with a high degree of change.
• Strong technical and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated technical or leadership success with programs containing a high degree of technical and market uncertainty.
• Experience managing capital equipment and infrastructure
• Experience / knowledge in one or more of the following fields:
o Material Mechanics
o Mechanical or Electrical Modeling/Simulation
o Mechanical or Electrical Material Characterization
o Electromechanical System Design and Development
