Position Purpose:
This position is responsible to complete the apprenticeship program to attain the qualifications of a journeyman communication technician. This position is also responsible to become proficient in installation, maintenance and repair of microwave, fiber optic systems, ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio systems and associated subsystems.
This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position, which may allow physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems.
Essential Functions:
- Install, operate, and maintain, microwave, fiber optic, and mobile radio systems, as directed by the job supervisor. Install and maintain digital microwave, fiber optic cable, fiber optic terminals, time-division multiplex (TDM) equipment, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, tower light controls, and data modems in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations. Install and maintain ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio repeaters, and base station, mobile, and portable radios. Develop installation, testing, and maintenance procedures for equipment.
- Maintain alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) power systems, including propane fueled standby generators and automatic transfer panels, which supply emergency power to microwave stations.
- Complete the appropriate test forms, reports, timecards, mileage logs, and all other assigned and required paperwork for submission to the appropriate personnel.
- Maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, and assist other trades in operating and maintaining the assigned TSM shops and adjoining BEPC property.
- Promote safe work practices including use of Job Safety Analysis and Daily Tailgate briefings. Follow established safety procedures to minimize accidents and utilize personal protective equipment where required.
- Provide outside site maintenance including performing building maintenance, inspecting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, inspecting guy wires, mowing, cutting weeds, fixing fences, etc.
Qualifications:
Communication Technician Apprentice:
- Associates degree in electronic technology, or a related field.
Communications Technician Journeyman:
- Associates degree in electronic technology, or a related field, and an accredited Communication Technician apprenticeship program which includes 4 years of industry experience; or
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED); and 6 years of industry experience as a Communication Technician.
Other Requirements:
- Knowledge of computers, electronic theory and its applications, microwave, fiber optic systems, and UHF radio system maintenance and repair.
- Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Knowledge of networking and troubleshooting skills.
- A first, second, or general class FCC license (need to have by the end of first six months of employment).
- The incumbent must complete the apprentice training program within the first four years of employment to obtain the qualifications necessary to be a Communication Technician Journeyman.
- A valid drivers license in the state of residence.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:
This position requires frequent sitting, standing, bending, reaching, use of keyboard/computer and use of tools; and occasional walking, climbing stairs or ladders, crawling, kneeling, lifting/ carrying up to 50 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 135 pounds. Finger dexterity, ability to perform close work, good color vision and hearing, and the ability to speak, read, and understand English are all required. Requires the ability to analyze data and reports, implement recommendations, grasp new technologies, and work under pressure to complete projects within deadlines. The incumbent may frequently be exposed to electrical risks, and occasionally work around dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, poor ventilation, and confined spaces. The incumbent will also be required to work at heights up to 50 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards. Harness rating usually 300 lbs, including tools, clothing, and the individual. Occasional overnight travel is required. Some travel may be required during adverse weather conditions. During winter months requires driving, hauling, loading and unloading an enclosed, tracked snow machine for site access. The incumbent must remain fit for duty. This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) (FMCSA) (non-CDL) qualified position.
Wage: $47.94 - $57.07 per hour
