Pratt & Whitney's Engine Design & Systems Integration (EDSI) team is seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented, and results-driven Senior Principal Systems Design Engineer to support groups in implementing technical product improvements, resolving field issues, investigating field events, ensuring safety and reliability, and read across to engine programs. The selected candidate will be the primary engineering overall customer technical contact to resolve day-to-day issues affecting fleet and sustainment support, and will work closely to develop mid/long-term strategic initiatives to address unplanned engine removals, improve engine efficiency, and address fleet safety items. The selected candidate will be responsible to integrate and execute systems design deliverables. This position is highly interdisciplinary and team-oriented, requiring excellent communication and collaboration skills and self-motivation.

What You Will Do:

  • Define and manage mechanical configuration, integration, development, and validation to meet system requirements for loads, balance, rotor dynamics, secondary flow, bearing architecture, and RMS.

  • Lead system physical architecture definition (bearing architecture, load path, subsystem layout, RMS, survivability) for new and derivative engines.

  • Own design for RMS and system-level FMECA engagement.

  • Establish and drive Trade studies with heavy mechanical/physical engagement.

  • Own mechanical/physical system risks and create and drive mitigation plans to closure.

  • Lead/coordinate technical resolution of mechanical/physical issues with airframers.

  • Own Ultimate Failure Strategies/Hazard Management plans and mitigations.

  • Own design for assembly and axial gapping analysis.

  • Oversee rotor balance system implementation and radial clearance assessments.

  • Serve as EDSI POC for mechanical SSIPT’s (Clearance, Oil, Secondary Air System).

  • Manage system-level analysis and design for loads/rotor dynamics.

  • Manage system-level analysis and design for thrust balance.

  • Develop well-rounded systems engineers.

  • Travel up to 10%.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • A Bachelor's in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) degree and 10 years of mechanical engineering design/design integration experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and 7 years of mechanical engineering design/design integration experience.

  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Key technical skills leveraged by System Design engineers include mechanical design, structures, heat transfer, data analysis, probability and statistics, manufacturing, assembly, vibration, aerodynamics, secondary flow, duct losses, product definition, concept optimization, trade studies, system level root cause, ultimate failure strategy identification, balance, multidisciplinary design optimization.

  • Competent in one or more of the following engineering disciplines: design, project, structures, or functional integration.

  • Practical experience with systems-level analysis tools and methods, and how integrated to other Systems Design objectives (e.g. structural rotating part lifing, turbine durability, general structural integrity, clearance and gapping assessments).

  • Knowledge of project management.

  • Knowledge of configuration management (BOM, Teamcenter).

  • Ability to identify links and potential impact on projects and programs.

  • Pratt & Whitney Engineering knowledge or work history.

Department/Segment Overview : The Engine Design & Systems Integration (EDSI) - The EDSI Commercial Engines and Military Engines organizations are focused on delivering systems solutions to meet customer requirements, driving engineering quality and productivity, and developing the next generation of systems engineers.​​ EDSI is responsible for the integration of components, modules, and sub-systems into world-class commercial and military propulsion systems.​​

What is my role type : In addition to transforming the future of flight, we are also transforming how and where we work. We’ve introduced role types to help you understand how you will operate in our blended work environment. This role is:

  • Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.

The salary range for this role is 124,000 USD - 250,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
