Wells Fargo Lead Credit Risk & Approval Officer - Corporate & Investment Banking, Corporate Risk in WEST DES MOINES, Iowa

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Lead Credit Risk & Approval Officer in our Commercial Real-estate space to join our Risk team covering Multifamily Capital.

A successful candidate will leverage their experience and knowledge of risk management, business functions, products, and services to provide independent, holistic credit leadership and oversight of the business. This role will provide business loss forecasting as well as reporting for both, quarterly business review and relationship concentration. They will monitor and review loan underwriting and portfolio management performance, analyze new business prospects, and support strategic initiatives of the relevant business lines. The role may regularly assist in presenting to senior management on the credit risk position of the business.

This role will report directly to the Multifamily Capital Senior Credit Officer.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead complex initiatives including those that are cross-functional with broad impact

  • Act as key participant in monitoring and reviewing group loans, underwriting, and portfolio management performance for Credit Risk & Approval

  • Review and analyze complex multi-faceted, larger scale, or longer term business, operational, or technical challenges

  • Provide in-depth evaluation of multiple factors including structuring, pricing, and documentation

  • Receive direction from leaders and exercise independent judgment while developing the knowledge to understand function, policies, procedures, and compliance requirements

  • Collaborate and consult with peers, colleagues, and managers to resolve issues and achieve goals

  • Interact with internal and external customers

  • Provide a commercial approach to the business balancing market realities with appropriate risk management.

  • Maintain appropriate credit quality and portfolio health through proper, timely and thoughtful credit risk decisions, recommendations, and approvals.

  • Identify and manage portfolio trends, portfolio risks and concentrations.

  • Ensure timely and accurate approvals; portfolio monitoring and reporting, risk rating grading changes and certifications, problem loan management, and non-accrual and loss identification and forecasting.

  • Bring appropriate team members (inside and outside the LOB) into the deal approval process.

  • Assist and support business units in their efforts to prepare for and achieve satisfactory exams from RAR, OCC, Audit, etc.

  • Reinforce Wells Fargo’s strong credit culture and strengthen team member engagement across the region.

  • Train and develop team members to ensure a strong pipeline of diverse future leadership talent at all levels of the organization.

  • Play an active role in knowing and supporting the customer by attending customer meetings.

  • Develop an expertise in the geographies / markets covered by actively participating in the local real estate community and industry organizations.

  • Identify and recommend opportunities for approving loans and partner on structuring pricing and documentation for loan transactions of large size

  • Credit oversight for a business unit that provides FNMA, FMAC and FHA financing for multifamily, senior housing, affordable housing, mobile home, student housing and co-op products.

  • Credit coverage includes screening, underwriting, portfolio management, CRE reporting, policy, relationships to those with delegated credit authority, staff management, credit process administration, and ad hoc projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Credit Risk & Approval or equivalent experience demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

Desired Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Commercial real estate lending experience.

  • Existing knowledge of GSE multifamily lending products (FNMA, FMAC and FHA).

  • Existing knowledge of affordable housing and associated tax credits (Low Income Housing Tax Credit Investments).

  • Prior real estate loan workout experience.

  • Proven knowledge of the commercial real estate capital markets industry as well as related products and services.

  • Deep understanding of Wells Fargo’s Commercial Real Estate (CRE) lending philosophy and credit culture.

  • Confirmed ability to be a thought leader in a large matrix organization.

  • Consistent success in making sound business, credit decisions and ability to ensure team member alignment with business strategies and risk appetite.

  • Demonstrated success making deals and building relationships.

  • Proven success developing, growing, and grooming future Wells Fargo business leaders.

  • Proven ability to work independently and across various LOB in challenging work environments and time frames.

  • Existing knowledge of / experience in the local markets and or business units a plus.

Job Expectations:

  • Ability to work on-site at one of the posting locations.

  • This position currently offers a hybrid work schedule.

Pay Range

Reflected is the base pay range offered for this position. Pay may vary depending on factors including but not limited to achievements, skills, experience, or work location. The range listed is just one component of the compensation package offered to candidates.

$144,400.00 - $300,000.00
