Walgreens Senior Director, Federal Government Affairs in WASHINGTON, District Of Columbia

Job Description:

The Senior Director of Federal Government Affairs will lead a portfolio of federal policy issues and develop strategies that advance Walgreens’ interests in Washington, D.C.

This role requires strong policy and political experience, the ability to think strategically, and a clear understanding of how public policy impacts business operations and reputation. The Senior Director will represent Walgreens with Congress and federal agencies, while also playing a leading role in the company’s engagement with industry associations, coalitions, and other external policy stakeholders. This individual must be able to translate complex issues into clear, actionable insights, positioning Walgreens as a trusted and proactive leader in federal policy discussions.

The ideal candidate will bring a combination of political and policy expertise along with experience working in or alongside business-focused environments—whether in the private sector, at a trade association, or in another organization with a strong connection to industry priorities. They should be comfortable developing and executing political engagement strategies, attending fundraisers, and contributing to enterprise-level decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a portfolio of federal policy issues; develop and execute advocacy strategies that advance Walgreens’ policy and business objectives

  • Serve as a strategic advisor and partner to internal stakeholders by providing business-relevant guidance and helping align enterprise strategy with the current federal policy agenda and political environment

  • Represent Walgreens in direct engagement with Members of Congress, congressional staff, federal agencies, and other key stakeholders

  • Play a leading role in shaping Walgreens’ involvement in industry associations and coalitions to ensure a proactive participation for the company

  • Monitor legislative and regulatory activity; assess risks and opportunities and communicate implications to senior leadership and cross-functional teams

  • Guide Walgreens’ political engagement strategy, including fundraising activity, political event planning, and long-term relationship development

  • Support strategic planning and positioning efforts for the federal government affairs team within the broader enterprise context as part of an integrated corporate affairs function

  • Prepares collateral and support materials such as comment letters, policy papers, testimony, presentations, and advocacy memos

  • Collaborate with state government affairs team to ensure coordination and alignment between state-level and federal advocacy efforts

  • Directly or indirectly responsible for coaching, mentoring and developing junior-level talent

External Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of experience working in Federal Government Affairs OR a High School Diploma and at least 11 years of experience working in Federal Government Affairs

  • Experience executing a successful Federal Government affairs program with a high degree of political sophistication

  • Experience working with the political process

  • Experience dealing with federal funding agency issues

  • Experience working in a political environment with a high degree of political sophistication, comprehensive understanding of the political process, and knowledge of the intricate relationships among elected officials and their constituents

  • Experience cultivating/maintaining relationships with federal elected officials, federal funding agency leadership and their staffs

  • At least 5 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace

  • At least 5 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership

  • Willing to travel up to/at least 20% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or MBA
