Bloomberg Homeland Security and FBI Reporter in Washington, District Of Columbia

Bloomberg News is looking for a scoop-driven, enterprising reporter to cover the Department of Homeland Security and FBI — a critical beat at the center of the Trump administration’s sweeping domestic agenda.

As the administration moves to implement an expansive deportation plan, you'll report on how politics, policy, and power collide within DHS and across federal agencies. This high-impact role includes coverage of immigration enforcement, border security, and counterterrorism, with a sharp focus on the administration’s evolving strategy and its wide-ranging implications.

You’ll also cover the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Secret Service — tapping into and cultivating a robust network of sources to track developments in law enforcement, security, and politically sensitive investigations.

This beat is fast-paced, deeply consequential, and demands relentless reporting, strong sourcing, and a deep understanding of how government agencies operate under political pressure.

We’ll expect you to:

  • Break exclusive stories and deliver authoritative coverage of Homeland Security, the FBI, and the Secret Service

  • Build a strong network of sources across federal agencies, Capitol Hill, law enforcement, and political circles

  • Provide sharp, insightful reporting on how DHS policies are affecting the U.S. economy, civil liberties, and public safety

  • Cover breaking news events — from major security incidents to politically charged investigations — with speed and accuracy

  • Collaborate closely with teams across the Bloomberg newsroom, including legal, political, and international desks

You’ll need to have:

  • 10+ years of journalism experience

  • Experience covering national security

  • A strong track record of breaking news and filing high-impact enterprise stories

  • Deep sourcing or the ability to quickly build trusted relationships with key players across government and intelligence communities

  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to deliver fast, clear, and analytical copy under pressure

  • A collaborative mindset and experience working in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment
