Location: Michigan and Iowa

Responsible for managing all vegetation management activities related to the scope and specifications outlined in Vegetation Management Plan (TVMP). Develop contracting strategies with Supply Chain Management to ensure efficient work execution strategies.

Ensure that contractors adhere to the standards and specifications in the areas of safety, work execution, environmental policies and procedures. Directly interfaces with management and the public as required in achieving program goals. Manage10-12 direct reports responsible for $30M+ contracted work annually.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the group responsible for managing all transmission vegetation management activities to the scope, terms, and conditions specified in the TVMP so that the work is completed on budget, on schedule, and to the quality levels specified. This prime responsibility is necessary for company to successfully meet annual budget targets, internal and external customer schedule commitments, reliability goals, and transmission revenue projections. The manager is directly responsible for delivering Vegetation Management activities representing $30 to $40 million contracted work annually.

  • Consult with the Supply Chain Management Group in developing long-term contract strategies for transmission vegetation maintenance. This involves evaluating the benefits and risks associated with implementing specific contract options to ensure any risks being taken are balanced with the cost/schedule advantages associated with particular contract strategies. Contracting strategies that will be evaluated range from “time-and-material” to “unit based” programs.

  • Direct the System Foresters in developing annual plans for all vegetation related activities including identifying the appropriate permits required for each project, obtaining these permits, and ensuring adherence to the permit requirements. Interfaces with state/local environmental agencies such as Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP), National Forestry Service (NFS) and Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) when significant environmental issues arise and develop mitigation plans as needed to satisfy the external agencies.

  • Develop performance standards for Vegetation Management. Act as the primary interface with contractors on performance metrics and ensure contractors develop and regularly supply performance indicators. Use these indicators to develop new work processes or improve existing work processes that lead to improved efficiencies.

  • Ensure project status/progress reports are completed and supplied to leadership. Use progress reports to identify cost/schedule issues and initiate the development of corrective action plans as needed to keep projects on budget and on schedule.

  • Participate in development of the annual and longer-term budget by providing budgets, cash flows and completion schedules which directly impact the earnings forecast. Responsible for delivering transmission vegetation management projects on or ahead of schedule.

  • Direct the system Foresters in managing all vegetation related work performed by contractors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 8 years equivalent experience.

  • Strong knowledge and experience (8 years) in Electric Utilities functions and processes.

  • Extensive experience (>8 years) in vegetation management, construction, and contract management, engineering, or project management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.

  • Management/Supervisory experience in vegetation management, construction, contract. management, engineering or project management.

Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.
