GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is an agency committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a full-time Custodian for the Facilities Management Program in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position provides professional, cost-effective management and operations of WYDOT facilities for the occupants, customers, visitors, and citizens of the State of Wyoming.

As a Custodian, you will ensure the facilities are well maintained, safe, attractive, and have comfortable environments in which the State's business is conducted. This position will help facilitate Facility Management with innovative solutions while recognizing our customer's unique differences and providing for their needs.

Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the Old West's history. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Maintains a safe and healthful environment for the benefit of all employees and the public, under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor, in compliance with the laws and regulations, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), safety training, Worker's Compensation, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), by promoting the health and safety programs

  • Introduces new cleaning methods by demonstrating techniques and procedures

  • Reports injuries or incidents according to established agency procedures; assists with emergency evacuations

  • Responsible for general cleaning, vacuuming floors and furniture, emptying trash, and dust, washing windows and mirrors, cleaning restrooms and bathrooms, snow removal around the building, the security of doors and windows, buffing and burnishing, and finishing floors, treating floor drains, inspect fire extinguishers monthly, laundering of cleaning towels

  • Sweeps sidewalks and empties cigarette urns; sets up meeting rooms by arranging furniture and other audiovisual equipment and training aids

  • Operates heavy-duty scrubbing, shampooing/extracting, and wet/dry pick-up equipment

  • Maintains an inventory of cleaning supplies and materials; notifies supervisor when additional supplies and materials are needed

  • Selects products and compounds for cleaning jobs, measures and mixes compounds, disinfectants, and sanitizing agents, and applies according to procedures, manufacturers' specifications, or SDS

  • Plans and establishes objectives respective to his/her assigned buildings

  • Operates and demonstrates the operation and maintenance of all types of machinery and equipment. Empties items into recycle bins and empty bins into the roll-off dumpster, ensuring that all items are sorted appropriately. i.e., paper, plastic, cardboard, and aluminum

  • Performs ground maintenance duties, including mowing and weeding grass in the summer months and care and maintenance of trees, shrubs, flowers, and snow removal in the winter months

  • Assists other crews, temporary assignments to assist other crews

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to candidates who have two or more years of progressive work experience in providing custodial care.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of materials, supplies, equipment, and methods of more technical cleaning and maintenance

  • Knowledge of custodial services operations

  • Knowledge of the proper operation of building systems

  • Ability to recognize equipment and system malfunctions

  • Ability to initiate emergency procedures and follow the Emergency Action Plan to include a checklist

  • Ability to communicate written word and orally

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

High School Diploma

Experience:

0-6 months of progressive work experience (typically in Building and Grounds)

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

1-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Building and Grounds)

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids, chemicals, bio-hazards, and the elements

  • Must be able to drive vehicles and operate large complex cleaning and grounds maintenance equipment

  • Working hours are 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM

  • Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds as needed

  • This position is classified as essential personnel and must report to work even if the facilities are closed

  • The successful applicant will have to pass the background information check, which includes taking fingerprints. This information will be processed through the Wyoming Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

  • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.

  • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.

  • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.

  • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
