GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking highly motivated, organized, and professional applicants for a legal assistant/paralegal position with the School Finance Litigation Division. The primary role of this position is to assist the attorneys assigned to represent the State of Wyoming in school funding matters. The division advises the Governor, Legislature, and education agencies on the legal aspects of funding schools for Wyoming's children. The division is involved in the modification, implementation, and maintenance of the school finance system, including the school funding model's recalibration. Finally, the division is responsible for the defense of the state's funding of schools in litigation.

Responsibilities of this position are those typical of a legal assistant/paralegal, including legal research, drafting and editing legal documents and correspondence, maintaining case files and records, and assisting with discovery. Other responsibilities include assistance with case development, investigation, client contact, and assisting attorneys at trial. The paralegal hired for this challenging position will be expected to handle a wide array of tasks for multiple attorneys with strict internal and external deadlines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Legal research as requested by the attorneys.

  • Drafting, revising, proofreading, and editing legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, motions, and other court documents.

  • Case opening and closing.

  • Assisting with the administration of established strategies and goals.

  • Use of proper citation for case law and other authorities as listed in the Bluebook of Citation.

  • Assisting attorneys in preparing for hearings, trials, and meetings.

  • Compiling information necessary for reports and case development.

  • Consistently demonstrating analytical ability, administrative skills, ingenuity, and independent judgment.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to candidates with an Associate' or Bachelors's degree in paralegal studies, paralegal certificate, or equivalent prior paralegal work experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of legal concepts, terminology, principles, and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the use of legal reference material and legal research.

  • Knowledge of government and legislative processes.

  • Knowledge of Wyoming Statutes and agency mission goals, policies, and procedures.

  • Reading, analyzing, and organizing moderately complex legal material including court cases and opinions.

  • Ability to reason logically analyze situations accurately and recommend an effective course of action.

  • Ability to multitask efficiently, accurately, independently, and in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to anticipate, plan for, and meet case deadlines.

  • Ability to work and communicate cooperatively with all levels of government personnel and the general public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Paralegal / Legal Studies)

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Paralegal / Legal Studies) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Legal Support Specialist

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Paralegal / Legal Studies) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Legal Support Specialist

OR

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

National Association of Legal Assistants certificate as a CLA or ALS (Certified Legal Assistant) or CP (Certified Paralegal) or National Federation of Paralegal Association PACE Registered Paralegal.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position requires the incumbent to perform desk work.

NOTES:

  • FLSA: Non-exempt

  • Successful applicants are required to pass a background investigation.

  • Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience.
