Forest Service Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Preparation) in United States

Final determination of the duty location will be made at the time of the job offer. Responsibilities Duties listed are at the full performance level, GS 7. Lay out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments. Draft timber cruise plans and sample surveys to estimate quality and quantity of timber. Interpret silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvestable timber. Perform timber cruising duties including estimating volume, defect and quality timber using standard cruising methods such as fixed variable plot, tree measurement, species identification, and traversing. Provide technical assistance to specialists in the development of logging plans and preliminary road location. Write reports describing timber sale, resource, topographic features, and compliance of timber marking. Summarize cruising and marking data and prepare reports and topographic maps indicating quantity of timber and condition of area. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Specialized Experience Requirement: GS 6: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS 5. Examples of specialized experience may include: Used timber cruising tools and techniques to conduct certified timber cruiser activities; Recorded tree measurements, assessed quality, and determined defects; Applied silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; Measured amount and quantity of timber in designated timber sale areas. OR One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. GS 7: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level. Examples of specialized experience may include: Marked trees using marking rules in areas complicated by variations in type, species composition, defect, site, age, class, etc.; Used computer programs required for data collection, cruise processing, traversing, and Global Positioning Systems(GPS); Laid out boundaries of cutting areas as outlined in the NEPA, considering variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements. OR One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education See above for education that may be qualifying for the specific grade level. Additional Information The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply. However, promotion is not guaranteed. This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
