Vectrus Stevedore, Lead in Marshall Islands

Overview

This position will be physically located in The Marshall Islands in support of LOGCAP

  • Under the supervision of the Stevedore Chief, the Stevedore lead Assists the Port Agent in supervising the stevedore teams to load and offload cargo, supplies and equipment from assigned and visiting vessels; In the absence of the Port Agent, supervises a permanent stevedore crew and during Matson operations a crew of approximately 30 people.

Responsibilities

This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.

  • Coordinates with the Port Agent of all special cargo operations when the Chief Stevedore is absent;

  • Assists in stevedore training and development of cargo plans;

  • Alternate Plant Property custodian for all assigned equipment;

  • The normal operator of the marine crane as well as assisting with the rigging of cargo gear;

  • When required supervises the safe on and offload cargo, supplies and equipment from ship to shore and vice versa;

  • Assists in the training of any riggers spotters, signalmen, and general stevedores;

  • Assists with the maintenance of all associated stevedoring equipment like tie downs, pennants, hooks, spreader bars, etc.;

  • The normal person to operate the assigned heavy equipment (cranes);

  • Understands Department of Transportation and U.S. Army regulations with respect to all stevedoring operations;

  • Performs assigned tasks/efforts to include government directed work schemes under general direction within the safe guidelines and standard maritime practices.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education if the degree is required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Certifications:

  • Licensed Heavy Equipment Operator

  • Certified Rigger

  • Experience:

  • Three (3) years of related experience. Experience as a Rigger or operator of heavy equipment required; Ability to understand, follow and train required safety regulations as related to stevedoring.

  • Preferred skills:

  • Must also be able to communicate well as part of a small team and work cooperatively with other colleagues.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and details simultaneously.

  • Results orientated with ability to plan and deliver against project deadlines.

  • Resilient, self-motivated, and able to work well under pressure.

  • Ability to deal with problems and implement effective solutions.

  • Flexibility to work varying shifts and time schedules as needed.

  • Skills:

  • Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and storage requirements to meet compatibility of products based on hazard class is required.

  • Strong interpersonal skills are required.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement is required.

  • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy is required.

  • Advance ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in written form is required.

  • High-level organizational and planning skills, so that workflow is managed and accurate is required.

  • Working Conditions:

  • Must be capable of working in an extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, dry, duty, desert environment with average temperatures of 130 degrees in the summer months). Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.

  • Physical Requirements:

  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.

  • Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.

  • Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.
