Job Summary
An employee in this class performs tasks of applying protective coatings for the purpose of protection and beautification.
Duties & Responsibilities
Preparation and painting:
? Interior - Removes furniture and wall hangings. Protect permanent fixtures. Tape off baseboards, chair rails and windowsills. Place drop cloths on the floors for protection. Patch walls as needed. Clean the vents, diffusers and ceiling grid. Wash the walls and trim. Apply primer and finish coats of paint.
? Exterior - Prepare the substrate by power washing, scraping, sanding, scarifying or sandblasting. Replace and glaze the broken glass. Apply primer and finish coats of paint.
? Rigging - Erects and uses stationary scaffolding, mobile scaffolding, suspension scaffolding, boatswain\'s chair, window jack scaffold, ladders, ladder jacks, pick boards, and man lifts.
? Responsible for the security and maintenance of all painting equipment such as brushes, rollers, drop cloths, ladders, spray equipment, scaffolding, man lifts, etc.
Layout and stripe parking lots and streets.
Fabricate and install signage (hand lettering, stencils, silk screening, vinyl, engraving, etc.).
Tape and finish drywall.
Fabricate and install aluminum storefronts. cut and install glass for windows, doors, desktops and fume hoods. Apply window films.
Install wallpaper, vinyl, foil, grass cloth and wall liners.
Remove graffiti.
Train painter apprentices.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Additional Physical Demands
1. Work is assigned through the Foreperson, Sub-Foreperson, Work Management Group, Service office, or via the Associate Director Building Maintenance & Grounds, or his Designee in oral or written form. There is very limited supervision provided. The Painter is responsible for assuring their work is completed properly in accord with statues and codes in a safe and timely manner. The Painter is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services. The Painter must exemplify high standards of professionalism, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
2. Interacts with Campus Customers, Supervision, and peers. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout the University campus.
3. May work from roof, ladder, scaffold or stage
4. May work while wearing a respirator.
5. May work when exposed to vehicular traffic.
6. May work at heights, depths, confined spaces, noisy areas and in inclement weather
7. May work at heights on platforms or hung above tall ceilings.
8. May work amid hazards of work sites such as dust, noise, and in areas such as coal fired power plants, animal rooms, and laboratories.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Successful completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journey-level painter experience.
3. As required by the position to be filled, current license/certification consistent with vehicles, machinery, and equipment that is routinely used in the general occupational area.
4. Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver\'s license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proper use and care of tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of tools needed to complete a job assignment.
- Working knowledge of safety procedures.
- Have sufficient knowledge of the trade and be able to communicate and assist in the training of apprentices.
- Ability to estimate the amount of material used to complete a task.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3027 - Painter position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 5/12/2025. Starting salary is \$39.54/hour.
