JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: We are searching for an Uncrewed Systems (UxS) Department Head to join our Systems Engineering and Rapid Prototyping (SERP) Division of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a non-tenure Research Faculty.

The mission of the SERP Division is to provide full spectrum support for the research, evaluation, development, rapid prototyping, manufacturing, fielding, and testing of complex systems which support the warfighter and our nation's defense. The UxS Department supports this mission by executing the design, analysis, fabrication, integration, and flight / mission testing of critical technologies used in aerial systems. We leverage a systems engineering-based approach to a drone's value proposition to include: systems and subsystems, power and propulsion, avionics and control, advanced material and fabrication techniques, aerodynamic and aeroelastic analysis, and cross-domain concept of operations.

You will: Lead a group of engineers, scientists, and support staff that are engaged in the development of technologies critical to the advancement of unscrewed systems Lead and/or assist in the development of proposals and projects that further our knowledge and expertise in the development of unscrewed systems Provide project updates to sponsors and stakeholders, and lead or assist in development of new business for potential sponsors Collaborate with engineers in technical areas across ARL Plan, staff, and execute programs to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately and sufficiently tasked at all times Recruit, retain, and define performance expectations of department staff and faculty Identify professional development and training opportunities Mentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and research Evaluate professional growth through performance reviews

Faulty rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Minimally requires a Bachelors' degree in an engineering or science discipline and 5 years' related experience. A Master's Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering is preferred.

Required skills/experience areas include: All aspects of systems engineering including systems analysis and design, model-based systems engineering (MBSE), physics-based modeling & simulation, rapid prototyping, and test & evaluation Demonstrated success leading a team of engineers/scientists, and collaborating with large teams on multi-organization, multi-disciplinary projects Demonstrated success developing new business, including proposal writing and technical presentation skills Previous management and technical leadership in the development, engineering, and operation of unscrewed systems Active Secret security clearance

Preferred skills/knowledge includes: A Top Secret clearance or above

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in S ate College, PA.
