JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University (https://psu.edu/) in University Park, PA is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in Advanced Electron microscopy of beam-sensitive materials. A fully funded postdoctoral position is available in the field of in situ S/TEM study of beam-sensitive materials, including 2D materials, and organic perovskites. The position is partly in the NSF-funded center for 2DCC-MIP (one of the two national-wide centers that focus on the synthesis and characterization of novel 2D materials and their heterostructures).

Responsibilities will include:

  • Investigate the electronic and atoms structure of beam-sensitive materials including their defect structure using advanced S/TEM imaging and EELS spectroscopy techniques. This project is part of an extensive national and international team effort from the microscopy, synthesis, and theory communities.

  • The candidate will be primarily using a state-of-the-art aberration-corrected ultra-high resolution Titan3 microscope (including probe and image corrected and equipped with a monochromator).

  • The candidate will also have access to a wide range of in situ TEM holders (heating, electrical biasing, gas, and liquid holders), as well as 4D STEM capabilities, which will open us to a wide range of scientific ideas including understanding the material's structure, as well as its evolution under in situ conditions.

  • Penn State offers Cryo and Room Temperature Focused ion beam, scanning electron microscopy, low-temperature photoluminescence and Raman, etc. as well as the nanofabrication facility located within the Millennium Science Complex at Penn State for device fabrication.

The Pennsylvania State University`s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should provide evidence, either woven through their application materials, or with specific examples, of how they promote diversity and equity in their work environments.

Education and Experience:

  • The final applicant must be a highly motivated, self-driven, collaborative, skilled young microscopist with a Ph.D. in Materials Science, physics, chemistry, or a related field by the time of hire.

  • A background in aberration-corrected (scanning) transmission electron microscopy, preferably including in-situ scanning/transmission electron microscopy, advanced image analysis and programming (e.g., scripting in Digital Micrograph, Matlab/Python).

Application Instructions:

Candidates with the stated background and research skills are highly encouraged to apply and include their cover letter and CV. For any questions related to the position, please contact Dr. Nasim Alem at nua10@psu.edu .

Additional Information:

This is a Postdoctoral position, funded for one year from the date of hire, with the possibility of further extension.
