JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Health Promotion and Wellness (HPW) (https://studentaffairs.psu.edu/health-promotion) is seeking a Community Health Educator ( Student Wellness Specialist – Intermediate Professional ) to develop, deliver, and assess wellness initiatives . The position is also responsible for deliver ing one-on-one services to students with alcohol or cannabis policy and/or l egal violations .  The mission of HPW is to cultivate a community that supports student success, well-being, and the pursuit of lifelong health . The office is committed to supporting a safe and inclusive environment that fosters academic, social, cultural , and personal well-being. The Community Health Educator reports to an Assistant Director.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

  • Develop and deliver a wide range of wellness and health promotion initiatives, including educational programming, social marketing and outreach events, that meet the needs of diverse student groups (approximately 20 hours per week).  

  • Collaborate with a variety of offices and student organizations to identify the wellness needs for graduate and undergraduate students .

  • Develop and implement a broad range of research-based initiatives to support student mental health and well-being including, but not limited to, i nitiatives about resilience, mindfulness, and flourishing .

  • Provide individual alcohol and cannabis services ( approximately for 20 hours per week).  

  • Deliver brief screening, individual assessment, intervention, and referral for students with conduct - related violations and substance-related emergency department visits .

  • Educate students about harm reduction strategies.

  • Apply motivational interviewing strategies.

  • Conduct education workshops on a range of health and wellness topics for fraternities, sororities, student organizations, and academic classes. 

  • Complete other duties as assigned.

    Typical Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Typically requires a Master's degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    The following background checks must be successfully completed for this position:

  • Operation of a motor vehicle is part of the position’s duties and a valid driver's license is required . Successful completion of a motor vehicle records check, in addition to standard background checks, is also required .

    Additional Preferred Education, Experience, or Certifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience with the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) program and motivational interviewing is preferred. 

  • Knowledge of and experience with health promotion theory and strategies is preferred.

  • CHES certification is preferred, but not required .

    Additional Required Competencies:

  • A commitment to working with diverse populations is essential.

  • Ability to work within secure and confidential student information, including ability to work in an electronic medical record. 

  • Ability to  maintain high standards for evidence-based practice set by relevant professional organizations.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills are essential. Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ethical decision-making and the ability to be a flexible and collaborative team member.

$46,400.00 - $67,300.00
