This position is ECB status – requires a minimum number of worked hours per month as needed by the department; limited benefit offerings.

Job Summary: Responsible for preparing and staining complex pathology specimens for microscopic examination. Performs, develops, correlates, and assures accuracy and validity of laboratory testing and procedures; collaborates with Physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Leads lower-level staff as needed.

Minimum Education: Associate's degree required, preferably in a health care related field.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: None.

Work Experience: Six (6) months of laboratory experience, surgical and/or Mohs experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Basic knowledge of histotechnology safety and governmental regulations and standards. Good verbal and written communication skills. Able to apply Mohs techniques and procedures.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination. Performs more complex procedures for processing and staining tissues, including enzymes and immunohistochemistry. Solves more complex problems as they occur; makes decisions regarding possible specimen discrepancies. Assists with and/or performs gross examination and frozen section procedures in histopathology, as well as cytology specimen preparation methods. Identifies tissue structures, cell components, and their staining characteristics, and relating them to physiological functions. Recognizes factors that affect procedures and results; takes appropriate actions within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated. Develops, tests, implements, evaluates, and selects new techniques, procedures, and instruments/methods in terms of their usefulness and practicality within the laboratory. Assists during surgery, removes sutures, changes wound dressings, triages and preps patients for surgery, schedules surgery, and notifies patients of malignant pathological diagnosis. Maintains medical records including preparation of charts, filing of correspondence and test results. Assists in coordination of care according to established protocols. Successfully uses EMR and other computer applications to accomplish tasks according to policies and procedures. Tracks ordered or pending tests, procedures and referrals according to protocol. Develops solutions when the generation of laboratory data issues and problems occur.

Decision Making: Independent judgment in making decisions involving non-routine problems under broad supervision.

Working Relationships: Works with internal/external customers. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
