Join our dynamic Tracked Products Engineering Heavy Structures team as a Design Engineer for Electric Rope Shovels, Draglines, and Hydraulic Mining Shovel products. In this role, you'll dive into the design and analysis of cutting-edge components, working closely with top-tier manufacturers and suppliers. You'll be at the forefront of innovation, driving New Product Introductions (NPI), collaborating on New Supplier Introductions, and spearheading Continuous Product Improvements (CPI). Your expertise will ensure our products remain at the pinnacle of excellence, while you also play a crucial role in maintaining our high standards.

What you will do:

This position will focus first and foremost on product and process quality with a zero-defect mindset while also trying to hit the program timeline and cost goals.

Create design concepts and drawings of complex structural systems that meet functional and technical requirements, cost and weight goals, quality initiatives, and manufacturing process requirements.

Perform fatigue analysis on the concept using Creo Simulate.

Support validation activities such as test and field trials.

Support and lead APQP activities.

Collaborate with external suppliers and internal manufacturing facilities, engineering partners, and the core Product Group

What skills you will have:

Technical Excellence: Proficiency in creating robust designs for heavy structures to ensure they meet design requirements. Experience in any Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software to simulate and analyze structural behavior under various load conditions, optimizing designs for durability and efficiency

• Advise others on the assessment and provision of all technical solutions.

• Engage appropriate subject matter resources to effectively resolve technical issues.

• Mentors others to enhance their technical competence and its application to achieve more effective technical solutions.

• Coache others in promoting, defining, analyzing, and providing superior technical solutions to business problems.

• Provide effective solutions to moderate technical challenges through strong technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues.

• Assume accountability for personal technical performance and holds others responsible for theirs.

Product Design - MFG: Experience collaborating with suppliers to optimize designs for ease of manufacturability. Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including procurement, production, and quality assurance, to align design objectives with manufacturing capabilities

• Develop improvement plans for senior management and evaluates the outcome of the design against the functionality.

• Advise others on the development of multiple products and their functionality.

• Train others on advanced tools and approaches of product design.

• Monitor the processes and procedures of a complex product design to ensure functional requirements are met.

• Evaluate feedback from customers and consults on functional weaknesses.

• Control design and development costs of a proposed product through effective resource coordination.

Product Design and Development: Develop creative and effective design solutions that meet the functional requirements of the product. Conduct a thorough analysis and selection of materials to ensure product durability, performance, and cost-effectiveness, considering factors like strength, weight, and environmental impact

• Develop organizational standards and processes in order to maximize complex product services' efficiency and effectiveness.

• Create and introduces new techniques that expedite or simplify the development process.

• Supervise the management of multiple and diverse types of products or services.

• Develop proof-of-concept exercises to prove or disprove validity of proposed products.

• Advise on the appropriate solutions to complex product design and development problems.

• Design working prototypes of a variety of proposed products or services.

Effective Communication: The Design Engineer will need strong communication skills and great interpersonal skills to interact with other engineering teams, the platform team, purchasing teams, and manufacturing teams.

• Adapt documents and presentations for the intended audience.

• Demonstrate both empathy and assertiveness when communicating a need or defending a position.

• Communicate well downward, upward, and outward.

• Employ appropriate methods of persuasion when soliciting agreement.

Education requirements: Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum.

The Top Candidates will also have:

Electric Rope Shovel, Dragline or Hydraulic Mining shovel product knowledge.

Experience with Caterpillar Engineering Systems (Teamcenter, HVC, EDS, etc.).

Previous experience in either NPI or CPI programs.

Personal experience in executing APQP.

Additional Information:

This position requires the candidate to work full-time in the Tucson, AZ office.

Domestic relocation is available.

This position may require up to 10% travel.

Summary Pay Range:

$110,520.00 - $165,840.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
