DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Engineering Supervisor, Smart Systems & Health Monitoring to join our team in Engineering for our Troy, MI location.

This position will be part of the Advanced Engineering & Innovation Group within the Cummins Drivetrain & Braking System division. As an Engineering Supervisor, Smart Systems & Health Monitoring, your primary focus will be on leading a small group of engineers in the development of electronic systems used on commercial vehicle systems, with  primary focus on development of smart digital systems with focus onconnected products for prognostics and health monitoring applications . The position will support both R&D and Production Release Programs.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Design and Application of Mechatronics Systems: You'll specify and apply electronic hardware and interconnections to measure and control systems in Cummins' products.

  • Machine Integration and Optimization: You'll combine various parts or sub-systems to achieve optimal performance, reliability, cost, and quality, using standard tools and best practices.

  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis: You'll influence product design decisions by utilizing computational tools and methods to predict product capabilities.

  • Product Problem Solving: You'll solve product issues by determining the root cause, implementing data-based solutions, and preventing recurrence.

  • System Requirements Engineering: You'll translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, establish acceptance criteria, and track requirements throughout the system lifecycle.

  • Systems Thinking: You'll define and analyze the system of interest, predict its behavior, and devise modifications to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Builds Networks: You'll effectively build formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organization.

  • Communicates Effectively: You'll develop and deliver communications that clearly address the unique needs of different audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Investigate and Resolve Problems: Understand causal mechanisms, recommend appropriate actions, and document results with guidance from experienced team members.

  • Develop and Apply Processes and Tools: Create, manage, improve, and apply electronic application and systems development processes, including system specification, modeling, simulation, calibration, DVP&R, and troubleshooting.

  • Utilize Simulation and Calibration Tools: Apply tools for simulation, calibration, and product life maintenance to ensure quality and performance.

  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Obtain input from customers, technical and product teams, manufacturing engineers, supplier partners, and other stakeholders to deliver quality product decisions.

  • Make Informed Decisions: Make decisions in electronic and electrical system design, requirements, calibration, and test that impact the quality and performance of subsystems.

  • Review and Mentor: Review work of less-experienced developers/testers to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design, and coach and develop the next generation of technical experts.

  • Lead Problem Resolution: Provide leadership in resolving complex systems problems with high ambiguity and global business impact.

  • Coordinate and Direct Teams: Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems, coordinate and direct technical project teams, and mentor other engineers and project managers.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s). Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

This position will be part of the Advanced Engineering & Innovation Group within the Cummins Drivetrain & Braking System division. As an Engineering Supervisor, Electronic Systems, your primary focus will be on leading a small group of engineers in the development of electronic systems used on commercial vehicle systems, with primary focus on development of smart digital systems with focus on connected products for prognostics and health monitoring applications . The position will support both R&D and Production Release Programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a small team of electronics and electrical engineers, managing day to day activities, providing technical guidance, mentoring, and clear prioritization of engineering deliverables in alignment with project timeline.

  • Technical supervisory responsibility for project’s deliverables.

  • Lead the definition, design, validation and integration of electronic systems software & hardware (including electronic controls units, sensors, loads, actuators, power supplies, connectivity and user interfaces).

  • Key role in new and existing product development projects as the lead architect and systems integrator of electronic systems.

  • Lead product concept for electronic and digital connectivity solutions for Commercial vehicles.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional software, functional safety and mechanical engineering teams to specify design implications and requirements.

  • Primary interface for electronic systems topics with internal teams and customers.

  • Lead the coordination with the vehicle test team for the installation and deployment of electronic systems under development for field evaluation and data collection.

  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues during validation and integration activities for electronic systems

  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation, including layouts, drawings, specifications, and bills of material.

  • Implement project management methodologies (Agile, Scrum) in effectively managing projects from concept through production.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering with a minimum 10 years of industry experience.

  • Proven leadership experience in product development from concept to production. Prior technical project leader experience leading complex electronic system development is preferred.

  • Strong experience in designing and validating electronic system hardware (sensors, loads, actuators, electronic controllers, HMI, etc.)

  • Broad understanding of embedded systems, including microcontroller based PCBA and firmware, application software, safety critical systems, communication interfaces, analog, digital interfaces and power interfaces.

  • Strong experience in executing digital and connectivity solutions for automotive or commercial vehicle applications.

  • Experience working with ALM tools for requirements, project management and software version controls (Polarion/Doors, Jira, Azure/Git).

  • Experience working with evaluation boards, rapid prototyping and production ECUs.

  • Experience in System Engineering methodologies (ASpice, ISO26262)

  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations relevant to the product industry is a plus.

  • Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.

  • Willingness to adapt to evolving technologies and learning opportunities.
