Job Summary and Qualifications

Pharmacy Technician II personnel assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory, maintenance of records, and perform Pharmacy audits. Pharmacy technician personnel always work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

What you will do in this role:

  • Functional/Technical Skills – Has functional and technical knowledge and skills to perform the job at a high level of accomplishment. Open to and actively seeks to improve and apply new skills. Shares skills and knowledge with others.

  • Time Management – Concentrates efforts on priorities. STAT and NOW medication orders and locations of intensive care and emergency room. Doesn’t waste others time on activities with little value.

  • Attendance/Punctuality – Is on time to workstation ready to work at the start of the shift. Does not have an excessive amount of tardiness or absences.

  • Pyxis – Fills and delivers the daily Pyxis batch, works the medications not loaded report and processes the loads and unloads accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Stock refilling – Refills crash cart and anesthesia trays, RSI and Endo Kits, Heart Box, etc. accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Inventory Maintenance – Uses short book appropriately with complete item description and any additional helpful information. Puts wholesaler order and purchasing order away by end of shift. Completes the Omnicell counts on a daily basis. Recommends additions and deletions to stock in pharmacy or Pyxis.

  • Charge processing – Routinely completes patient charges and credits. Returns all credited meds to Omnicell making sure the count is correct.

  • Process discharges and transfers – Completes all discharges, credits appropriately and returns meds to stock. Completes all transfers by moving meds and IV’s appropriately.

  • Using office equipment – Able to use fax machine and printers, and able to perform minor maintenance such as toner or label replacement. Uses computer equipment/software for business purposes only.

  • Assist with inpatient dispensing – Accurately fills medications from generated labels, labels bags and bulk liquids appropriately affixing label to container and affixing an appropriate lot number and expiration date to bulk containers. With the medication request process, investigates prior filling before processing replacement label, charges for additional doses when indicated and troubleshoots the problem before involving pharmacist.

  • Unit dose packaging – Repackage medication according to established procedure with proper documentation, using good technique to prevent contamination.

  • Messenger Functions - Delivers medications according to posted schedule with no variance from schedule and making all appropriate stops; avoids personal conversations during runs, maintains security of delivery cart at all times; offers assistance between runs to pharmacists and other techs to promote smooth workflow.

  • Restocking – Restocks medications in medication areas (IV room, overflow for Omnicell, etc) in a timely manner and completes restocking before ending shift..

  • Using telephone – Uses proper telephone etiquette, identifies self when answering, answers calls promptly, and records messages correctly and completely.

  • Controlled substances – Delivers to appropriate location. Reports a discrepancy immediately. Retrieve narcotic waste from nursing units once per shift.

  • Quality Improvement – Offers suggestions for improvement, identifies problems AND offers solutions, openly accepts change and maintains positive attitude during change processes.

  • IV Admixture – Prepares IV admixtures in accordance with established procedures. Uses proper aseptic technique and prepares IV’s on time. Performs cleaning of laminar flow hoods and maintains records. Performs cleaning of IV room and compounding area. Completes credits before end of shift.

  • Logs – Accurately records data on all Pharmacy related logs.

  • Training - Assists in orienting new employees, students, and volunteers by communicating effectively in a friendly and courteous manner.

  • Inspections – Completes assigned nursing unit inspections before the end of the month.

What qualifications you will need:

  • Completion of two or more years of active hospital duties or is a graduate of a certified technician training program/healthcare careers college with one year of hospital experience.

  • Completion of a minimum 40 hours ACPE approved training in IV solution preparation and sterile techniques.

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board

  • State Registration Pharmacy Technician

  • High School Graduate / GED
