Amazon Program Manager Sustainability, Sustainable Buildings in Tokyo, Japan

Description

Amazon is seeking a Program Manager, Sustainability Innovation for Japan Customer Fulfillment Solutions (JCFS) Sustainable Buildings (SB) team. The Program Manager will be responsible for leading building design innovation workstreams across Japan that reduce carbon emissions and drive Amazon’s Operations (Ops) facilities towards The Climate Pledge (TCP) goals. The right candidate will demonstrate a track record of successful construction or engineering project and program management, leading cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment with high degree of ambiguity.

This role will lead initiatives to decarbonize Amazon Operations buildings through design optimization and low-carbon material innovation. The scope includes new and existing Delivery Stations (DSs), Fulfillment Centers (FCs) and Sort Centers (SCs). This role will primarily lead collaborations across Amazon to drive Net Zero Carbon (NZC) design measures into the JCFS SB design standards, as well as coordinate with partners in Ops and Facility Design & Construction (FDC) on specific projects undergoing technology piloting and early adoption.

As an experienced project and program manager, you will bring a depth of knowledge on sustainability design, project scope development, vendor & technical consultant management, stakeholder coordination, and project performance reporting. This role is part of a Sustainable Buildings team of Facilities, Sustainability and Ops Engineering (FSOE).

The role will be based in Tokyo Meguro, JP and will involve occasional domestic and international travel.

• Develop and socialize decarbonization strategy roadmaps for JP Ops building design. Co-develop strategy and measures with Sustainability PM, Engineering, and Building Design teams.

• Collaborate with World Wide Sustainability team to define carbon intensity targets and design measures to incorporate into design templates and standards.

• Collaborate with Worldwide Sustainability and Procurement teams to investigate Scope 3 emissions (embodied carbon) innovations, and develop a plan for early adoption or piloting of solutions with high technology readiness.

• Lead sustainability charrettes or kickoff sessions on demonstration projects or new building design to outline sustainability performance targets and measures to investigate.

• Collaborate with internal operations, design, and engineering stakeholders to continuously raise the bar on carbon emissions reduction, efficiency, and efficacy of building design programs.

• Manage third-party vendors and technical consultants that are engaged to explore new decarbonization technologies or develop design standards/specifications.

• Present innovation projects and facilitate strategic sustainable building design discussions with senior leadership.

• Facilitate workshops that drive alignment on key issues for new building designs and initiatives to drive sustainability, the associate experience, operational efficiency, and cost reduction.

• Develop and present NZC design strategy recommendations for each Operations business, and facilitate business leader approvals for design standard integration.

• Coordinate with FDC and Real Estate to track the status of building standards and revision cycles; harmonize with Amazon’s World Wide Sustainability (WWS) program guideline.

• Establish workflows for tracking the carbon impact of NZC design measures on various building types across numerous site-specific projects, visualized through program dashboards and monthly business reports.

• Support development of scopes of work and contract negotiations with vendors and present formal documentation for financial approval when required.

• Manage the development of NZC Program white papers, newsletter development, and other resources that broadcast program innovations to internal Amazon stakeholders.

• Support joint research and development of NZC building solutions with 3P development and landlord partners engaged with GR Transactions and Asset Management teams.

This position requires the perspective of implementing projects from both a short-term and long-term perspective. To implement sustainability initiatives, the communication and negotiation within and outside the company. While you may be required to come into the office at least 3 days per week for networking and meetings, you can also choose to work from home 2 days a week. Approximately once a month visiting site for project meeting and sometime business trip. Mainly one-day business trips but may occasionally travel overseas once a year or so (not mandatory, can be substituted with teleconference calls). Flextime: work hours can be changed in consultation with the manager.

Upon arriving at office, check emails, discuss with Real Estate team about the progress of new Build-to-Suit (BTS) projects. At the same time, discuss with FDC team to ensure that our latest design standards are correctly reflected in the new buildings. After lunch, having meeting with building owner to discuss the possibility of installing new sustainable solutions for their building. Occasionally having meeting with an external vendor about new technology such as lighting, air conditioning(HVAC), battery, material handling, solar panels and sub-metering. Make next year’s plan based on such new solutions. Lastly, attending internal sustainability weekly meeting and reporting this week’s progress and discussing how to overcome challenges with internal stakeholders(facility team, construction design team, engineering team, procurement etc.).

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of industrial engineer, operations engineer, manufacturing engineer, or project engineer in a manufacturing environment experience

  • Bachelor's degree

  • 3+ years of experience in building design, construction or engineering field

  • Fluent in verbal and written English and Japanese communication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, VBA, and SQL at the intermediate level

  • Experience working with and managing third party vendors

  • Experience in building portfolio performance management and/or corporate carbon reporting (e.g. LEED, ZEB, CASBEE, WELL)
