Athene Director Compliance in Tokyo, Japan

Purpose:

This is an exciting opportunity to work in our growing Tokyo office supporting critical Compliance initiatives. The role will oversee Athene’s Japanese compliance program and will be responsible for developing policies and procedures and monitoring activity to meet Japanese regulatory and legal obligations. This individual will be the primary contact with regulators in Japan. They will also work with the business to identify risks, advise on mitigation strategies and provide oversight.

Accountabilities:

  • Prepare filings to both regulators and associations.

  • Monitoring emails and other product materials. Should be familiar with key points of treaty conditions including collateral condition, financial covenants, various receiving and paying calculations; methods linked to market interest rate, equity index and policyholder’s action of underlying annuity products.

  • Confidently and correctly instruct business partners on the appropriate navigation of regulatory and compliance considerations for Athene’s Reinsurance brokerage business initiatives, including identifying risks, advising on appropriate mitigation, and providing oversight.

  • Develop, maintain and revise written internal Compliance policies and procedures and monitoring plans.

  • Act as the primary contact with regulators in Japan, developing and maintaining good relationships on behalf of Athene.

  • Provide reports on a regular basis to keep the Vice President of Compliance updated on active matters and planned activity.

  • Assist in the translation or review of external communications.

  • Liaise with Athene Legal team and help oversee external Japanese counsel on legal matters.

  • Partner on corporate governance and ongoing business registration matters.

  • Support Athene’s global functions, including Compliance, Legal, Internal Audit, HR, Finance, and IT/ Security.

  • Assist with other general compliance or legal matters and projects as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 7+ years of overall experience, including 4+ years’ experience in compliance, preference to those in Type I, Type II or DIM business.

  • Should have reinsurance brokerage experience, asset intensive reinsurance and/or OTC derivative with ISDA CSA at security house experience.

  • Strong knowledge of JFSA regulations, preference to those with reinsurance experience.

  • Company secretary experience at Japanese companies or para-legal experience to support corporate legal matters and filings, such as annual business report (of both Insurance Business Act and Japanese Companies Act).

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • Fluent in English and Japanese (oral and written).

  • Proven leader, and collegial and supportive team player.
