Position Summary:

Assist animal studies of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Under general direction of Dr. DeBerge, conducts activities to support research projects. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices.

Department Prefers the below:

  1. Under general direction by Dr. DeBerge, conducts research activities according to research protocol. Research activities include molecular analyses of neuroinflammation in experimental mouse models of neurodegeneration.

  2. Manages animal colony (e.g. breeding, genotyping) and experimental manipulation of mice (e.g. injections, diet administration, behavioral assays). Should have considerable experience in handling and experimentation with mice.

  3. Collect and perform molecular analyses on murine tissues and primary cells (e.g. quantitative PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry).

  4. Collects, evaluates, and interprets research data to provide needed information to Dr. DeBerge.Maintains an up-to-date online laboratory notebook and research protocols.

  5. Assists in the preparation and writing of research reports, manuscripts, papers and grant proposals for presentation and publication.

  6. Maintains a clean work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

  7. Orders and maintains laboratory reagents and supplies to ensure sufficient inventory to support research projects.

  8. As needed, may coordinate research efforts within the lab and outside laboratories.

  9. Complies with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulations, and codes.

  10. General knowledge of neuroscience or neuroimmunology.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Conducts research activities, under general direction, according to research. Research activities may include some or all of the following: patient recruiting and screening, traditional laboratory experiments and activities, informatics, field interviewer recruiting, screening and training and/or animal laboratories.

  2. Maintains adequate level of lab supplies to assure timely achievement of lab activities.

  3. Maintains accurate and timely records to include notebooks, records, databases, etc. as needed by the research project.

  4. Monitors laboratory and/or other supplies to ensure sufficient inventory to support research projects. Ensures quality of reagents or other supplies.

  5. Stays abreast of new and updated protocols for research department

  6. As needed, coordinates the work of laboratory technicians, support staff and other assistants to ensure efficient, timely and high quality results. Answers questions or resolves problems regarding routine or more complex duties.

  7. Complies with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes.

  8. May participate in continuing education programs, workshops and seminars.

  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

General knowledge and some detailed concepts of research field assigned.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

One year of related experience in a research or clinical lab environment.

May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.

Residency Requirement:
