Pulmonary Technologist

JOB SUMMARY

The Pulmonary Technologist performs various types of pulmonary function testing and investigation of arterial blood gases on patients to assist the physician in establishing the capacity of the heart and lungs and provides leadership for Pulmonary Technologist Trainee performing physician directed diagnostic tests.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

  • Performs variety of pulmonary function testing, investigation and reporting of arterial blood gases in accordance to written and verbal orders from physician.

  • Greets the patient, explains the test procedure, answers questions and attends to any patient needs in a professional manner.

  • Diligently observes patient, recognizes changes in condition and promptly seeks appropriate assistance.

  • Runs controls on blood gas analyzer in compliance with State and Federal regulations.

  • Administers lung volume and pulmonary mechanics tests and performs diffusing capacity tests using automated systems.

  • Performs gas testing of shunt studies and exercise studies including calculations and reporting results.

  • Assists Physician with bronchoscopy including setting up and cleaning equipment.

  • Maintains all equipment used for testing procedures including cleaning, repairing, quality control and stocking supplies. Completes record keeping requirements of safety inspections, MSDS and other related safety information.

  • Under supervision, assumes responsibility for Safety Procedure Manual, safety data as required by OSHA regulations.

  • Assists in the training of new employees by providing input regarding performance evaluations of employees and coordinating and presenting in-service education material. Demonstrates equipment and testing procedures to in-house staff, medical students, clinic and hospital personnel, any outside medical personnel requesting such instruction upon request from laboratory supervisor.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

  • General knowledge of Pulmonary Care modalities, therapies, equipment and medications.

  • Must be able to read, write and follow flow chart protocols as appropriate.

  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions.

  • Must have critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to follow established safety, infection control and isolation procedures at all times.

  • General computer skills, including but not limited to data entry, information security, electronic medical documentation, handheld scanning and email.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION - H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent

  • EXPERIENCE - 2 Years of Experience

  • CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION - Basic Life Support (BLS) Cert Pulmonary Function Tech (CPFT), Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP): Must be one of the following: Cert Pulmonary Function Tech (CPFT) Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).
