Overview: Youth Support Specialists provide services designed to restore, rehabilitate, and support a child/youth’s developmentally appropriate functioning as necessary for the integration of the child/youth as an active and productive member of their family and community with the goal of achieving minimal on-going professional intervention. Services we provide may include individual and group settings in the community. The Youth Support Specialist communicates with their direct supervisor to ensure program requirements are met.

Responsibilities

  • The Skill Builder follows and implements service plans as written to offer immediate and intensive services to children age 0-21 with behavioral health needs.

  • Assisting the child/youth to develop and apply skills in natural setting intended to foster and promote the developmental and needed skills identified in assessment or though the ongoing treatment of a licensed practitioner in accordance with the treatment plan.

  • Use rehabilitation interventions and individualized, collaborative, hands-on training to build developmentally appropriate skills to promote personal and community competence.

  • Increase social and interpersonal skills of identified youth/child to restore, rehabilitate, and support their integration within their community setting and personal relationships.

  • Assist in the development of daily living skills that support the effect of the child’s diagnosis and increase self-management.

  • Services can occur in a range of settings including community locations where the child/youth socializes, lives, works, attends school, and/or engages in services.

  • Deliver service activities in accordance with Medicaid billing and agency standards and the youth/child’s treatment plan.

  • Document all case activity in accordance with Medicaid billing and agency standards.

  • Collaborate with service providers who may be part of established treatment plan.

  • Demonstrate cultural competence and trauma-informed practice, as well as integrate understanding into daily responsibilities and participate in meeting the objectives of The Salvation Army, Syracuse Area Services Strategic Plan and participate in mandatory and optional trainings.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalency required.

Associates or Bachelor's Degree with up to one year of internship/work experience in children's mental health and/or special needs is desirable.

Experience: Related experience working with "at-risk" youth or with youth with mental health/special needs

Required: Valid NYS Driver License
