About the Role
Reporting to the Support Engineering Manager, the Senior Training Developer will play a pivotal role in designing and developing high-quality technical training courses and delivering Train the Trainer programs to ensure end-user capability. In addition to training design and development, this role focuses on enhancing technical writing standards and supporting the Engineering team’s documentation capabilities to meet critical business and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct training analysis and design activities to develop concise learning outcomes and training course curricula.
Deliver technical product training, including ‘Train the Trainer (T3)’ courses, to key stakeholders, ensuring training materials are comprehensive, effective, and delivered on time.
Write, format, edit, review, and proof-read procedural and technical information for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Collaborate with engineering teams to create high-quality documentation that meets user needs and customer standards.
Create exemplars and guidance materials; monitor, analyse, measure, and report on performance
Lead cross-functional teams to ensure collaboration and alignment in training and documentation projects.
Mentor junior team members and engineers, building capability within the team.
Develop and maintain project timelines for training and documentation deliverables.
Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure that milestones are met and risks are managed.
Develop KPIs to measure the effectiveness of training programs and documentation quality.
Analyse data to drive decisions and demonstrate the impact of training and technical writing improvements.
Implement digital learning platforms or other technologies to improve user engagement and accessibility of training materials.
Skills and Qualification
Certificate IV in Training or equivalent qualifications and above.
Proven experience in Instructional Systems Design (ISD), plus developing training materials and delivering technical product training.
Strong technical writing skills for diverse audiences, with the ability to simplify complex concepts.
In-depth Knowledge and experience of the Australian Defence Force’s ‘Systems Approach to Defence Learning’ (SADL), or similar military specifications.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional presentation capabilities.
Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Proven ability to introduce change and improve documentation and training standards.
Leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to mentor and guide team members.
Strong project management skills, including experience with tracking tools and managing deliverables.
Desirable to have
Defence industry experience and familiarity with Australian Defence Force training processes.
Experience with military Tactical Data Links (TDLs), including Link 16, Link 22, VMF, JREAP
Experience with Defence software systems such as DTCS (Digital Terminal Control Systems), AFATDS (Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System), or similar Army Battle Management Systems, AMPS (Australian Maritime Planning System), Shipboard Command and Control Systems, Battlespace Communications System, Air Defence Command and Control Systems.
Knowledge of AUSDEFCON processes and templates.
Experience with complex engineered systems and familiarity with product development processes.
Experience with S1000D and ASD STE-100 standards for technical documentation.
