Phillips 66 Control Laboratory Chemist, Sweeny Refinery in Sweeny, Texas

The Control Laboratory Chemist performs and maintains laboratory testing to determine chemical and physical characteristics or compositions of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for various purposes such as quality control, process control or product certification. The incumbent in this position participates in more specialized functions of the laboratory and is assigned a specific area. This position is responsible for performing tasks to maintain and calibrate instrumentation, standardize laboratory procedures, train lab technician staff, gather and interpret process-supporting analytical data, and monitor and control product quality.
Responsibilities May Include:
Interpreting analytical findings to assess compliance or noncompliance with company and industry standards
Communicating effectively with refinery personnel to determine testing needs
Ensuring the fulfillment of customer technical requests (e.g. samples, data, testing procedures)
Reviewing and updating analytical lab data and procedures
Maintaining Control Lab SPC charts and SPC samples
Collaborating with Technical Team Leader in purchasing necessary lab supplies and equipment
Troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment
Assisting with the development of capital budget for the Control Lab instrumentation needs
Implementing new instrumentation and methodology
Maintaining and repairing equipment in the Control lab (Bruker/Sindie/Horiba/Clora X-Ray instruments, Phase Analyzer, FTNIR, LECO Carbon, OptiDist, Simdist GCs, Grabners RVPs, etc.)
Backfilling for other Lab sections as needed
Possibility for call outs for emergency instrument maintenance
Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemistry
Knowledge of safe laboratory practices
Ability to work on cross-functional teams
Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
Travel up to 5% of the time
Occasional on-call duties
Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
Transport articles up to 50 pounds
Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
Work outside in harsh weather conditions
Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
Preferred Qualifications:
2 or more years of relevant laboratory experience in refining
Experience in instrumentation troubleshooting
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to interact with multiple layers of organization
Strong analytical skills, verbal and written communication abilities
Strong work ethic
Computer proficient with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SAP
Ability to operate independently as an experienced professional
The Sweeny Refinery is located in Old Ocean, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and aromatics units, as well as access to the on-site vacuum tower and delayed coking unit, which is an asset owned by Phillips 66 Partners. Sweeny processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and some light, low sulfur crude oil. Domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil is transported by truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, heating oil and petroleum coke. The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline and via tankers, through terminals on the Gulf Coast, including a deepwater terminal at Freeport. Refined products are distributed throughout the Midcontinent region, southeastern and eastern United States by pipeline, barge and rail car. Refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
