Google Staff Software Engineer, Borglet in Sunnyvale, California

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8 years of experience in software development, with data structures/algorithms.

  • 7 years of experience building and developing infrastructure, distributed systems, networks, compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.

  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience working with plugged-in modules managed by the BMC.

  • Experience with complex multi-component system software and distributed systems.

  • Knowledge of the Linux kernel interface, memory management, containers and an understanding of key concepts of performance analysis and tuning.

  • Understanding both kernel and user-space applications development, computer, storage systems, and networking architecture.

The Borglet team is responsible for the development, improvements, and maintenance of the node agent running on every compute node at Google. Borglet is a very complex multi-layered software responsible for the tasks lifecycle and runtime: starting, monitoring, and tearing down. In addition, Borglet is responsible for the machine resource monitoring and enforcement (Memory, CPU, Memory Bandwidth, NUMA, Network, Disk, Accelerators), machine and device management (power monitoring, resets, power cycles, device discovery), faults detection and reporting. It helps to run fleets (TI and GCE) efficiently and reliably, while interacting with most node-level systems and serving requests from Borg (cluster management system).

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $189,000-$284,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.   • Analyze, design, and implement software for computer platforms with a variety of sub-systems (different CPU architectures, memory subsystems, Smart NICs, accelerators, persistent storage, networking).

  • Collaborate with partner teams and users across Google such as kernel teams, the machine management team, platform teams, SRE teams, and Google's internal and Cloud and Machine Learning users.

  • Partner with technical leaders and execution owners both inside and outside the organization to align the team's roadmaps and projects, as well as to support early projects scoping.

  • Drive the team’s short-term and long-term project planning activities while owning the execution of the roadmap and meeting schedules.
