Amazon Hardware Electrical Engineer, System Integrity in Sunnyvale, California

Description

Do you want to shape the future of consumer electronics devices?

Amazon Lab126 is an inventive research and development company that designs and develops high-profile consumer electronic devices, creating the best-selling Kindle, Fire, Echo, and Astro family of products. What will you help us create?

The Role

As an Electrical Engineer in System Integrity team, you lead the charge in identifying what can go wrong and best ways to safeguard such failures in electrical design. The team works to apply customer use cases to products ensuring safety, reliability, and customer experience by design.

Our engineers work on multiple products starting in early concept with architecture and continuing through volume prototypes. We work backwards from real customer use cases and ensure the desired behavior of our devices. You will develop methodologies for battery protection and charging, electrical surge suppression, drop detection, ESD mitigation, electronic control & feedback, and more...

Engineers work independently to identify systemic or emerging design challenges facing customer use scenarios, develop a deep understanding of the issue, brainstorm mitigation methodologies, deploy improvements to products, and specificity test procedures to validate the improvement.

This is an electrical engineering position, however you will daily interact with teams for firmware, mechanical, thermal, manufacturing, and software.

Key job responsibilities

For these products you will start with customers and identify use cases. For each use case you will map through the electrical and firmware behavior to determine a method to achieve a desired result. You will frequently act as a problem solver, taking ambiguous or overly constrained issues and determining a path to a solution via hardware, architecture, or firmware design modifications. You will take advantage of device metrics and create new metrics to ensure continued growth in understanding customer usage patterns.

You are responsible for ensuring that the EE design is safe and meets the intended safety requirements. You will review the design from the early prototype phase, perform analysis and conduct testing to identify potential safety hazards and reliability problems. You will conduct deep dive on previous field issues, conduct failure analysis and apply the lesson learned on new programs. You will define FW requirements to ensure battery safety and create HW models for algorithm development. You will conduct PCB design and layout reviews and DFMEA to assess EE reliability/safety and device behavior in undesirable events such as moisture ingress, component failures, short-circuit, high temperature, electrical overstress and surge.
