Must possess and maintain a valid Louisiana driver's license and be able to drive a vehicle to perform duties.

Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish Program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education Program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

SANITARIAN 1 – requires a valid temporary permit issued by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians at the time of appointment. The Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians will make the final determination regarding permit/licensure eligibility. Starting Salary for Sanitarian 1 is $19.36 hourly.

SANITARIAN 2 – requires possession of a valid Louisiana Sanitarian's license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians at the time of appointment. The Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians will make the final determination regarding permit/licensure eligibility. Starting Salary for Sanitarian 2 is $20.72 hourly.

SANITARIAN 3/PUBLIC HEALTH INSPECTOR– requires possession of a valid Louisiana Sanitarian's license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians at the time of appointment. The Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians will make the final determination regarding permit/licensure eligibility. Starting Salary for Sanitarian 3 is $22.90 hourly.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Either of the following will qualify:

  1. A baccalaureate degree with a major in environmental health.

    1. A baccalaureate degree with 30 semester hours of specialized science coursework, to include at least six hours in chemistry or physics, ten hours in biological sciences, and an additional fourteen hours in any combination of chemistry, physics, or biological sciences.

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must possess a valid temporary permit issued by the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians at the time of appointment. The Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians will make the final determination regarding permit/licensure eligibility.

Must possess and maintain a valid Louisiana driver's license and be able to drive a vehicle to perform duties.

(The Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarian will make the final determination of acceptable coursework for permit/licensure eligibility.)

Function of Work:

To train as a Public Health Sanitarian responsible for inspection, investigation, permitting, licensing, and assisting in the enforcement activities of multiple public health environmental and consumer protection programs.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Sanitarian 2 by the absence of independent responsibility for entry level investigations and possession of a permanent license.

The primary function of this level is to receive the necessary training and experience to prepare for the responsibility of higher levels. The focus is on formal and on the job training in multiple public health environmental and consumer protection programs.

Examples of Work

Under close and immediate supervision, performs the following duties with progressive independence as ability is demonstrated and experience is gained.

Reviews permit applications for individual sewerage disposal systems, retail food establishments, and institutions or modifications to existing permits.

Conducts investigations to determine compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations and the State Sanitary Code.

Conducts routine inspections of permitted establishments and permitted sewerage systems.

Participates and/or assists in enforcement actions.

Assists in conducting on-site inspections of existing or proposed waste water discharges from facilities such as car washes, sewage treatment facilities, etc. onto highway right-of-ways.

Investigates complaints from the public regarding unsanitary conditions, insect and rodent infestations, food-borne illness, etc. and recommends any necessary corrective measures.

Participates in emergency response activities.

Collects drinking water, sewage effluent, and food samples for analysis.

Performs related work as assigned.
