Coral World Ocean & Reef Initiative Research Conservation Technician II in St Thomas, Virgin Islands

Position: Research Conservation Technician II Date: 10/01/2023 [[Classification: [[Regular, Full-Time, Non-Exempt *Reports To: Coral Scientist [[Department:[[ Conservation *[[Purpose of Position: [[The purpose of this position is to aid in the development and continuation of the CWORI Coral Genetic Rescue and Propagation Ark for the purposes of coral rescue, rehabilitation, and restoration in the face of ongoing SCTLD outbreaks and other climate-induced stressors in the USVI. This position will aid in the rescue of highly susceptible coral species and the transference of such corals to permanent holding systems at CWORI. The position will further assist with the gene banking and propagation (both sexual and asexual) of corals in human care for future outplanting initiatives around Coki Point and other key restoration sites. This position is entirely grant-funded and continuation of work beyond current grant agreements is subject to funding availability and CWORI management discretion. *[[Job Summary: [[Research Conservation Technician IIs will help in the development and operation of the [[CWORI Coral Genetic Rescue and Propagation Ark. [[On land, Conservation Technician IIs assist with the daily husbandry of all corals and other affiliated invertebrate species in human care through CWORI at Coral World Ocean Park. Research Conservation Technician IIs will assist the Coral Scientist with daily cleaning, feeding, and care of coral stock, propagation of corals using sexual (spawning) and/or asexual (micro-fragmentation) methods, regular health assessments of housed corals, and holding tank and life support system maintenance as needed. In water, Research Conservation Technician IIs will assist the Coral Scientist with rescue coral husbandry, critical care, assisted fertilization work, maintenance of life support systems and data management. Research Conservation Technician IIs are expected to perform duties in both the land-based facility and open water to assist with coral rescue work as needed.
