St Cloud School District 742 Guidance Counselor in St. Cloud, Minnesota

TYPE OF POSITION: F.T.E. Hours may vary based on program needs REPORTS TO: Building Principals SUPERVISION: None QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Current Counseling license issued by the MN Department of Education Master's Degree in School Counseling Preferred: Two years' experience working with students in a school setting Experience with students of diverse backgrounds Experience with mental health counseling Experience with Alcohol and Drug counseling POSITION SUMMARY: To provide a comprehensive school counseling program focused on chemical dependency issues which includes academic, career, and personal social domains designed to fit the needs of each school's unique population and characteristics. The school counselor provides programming which includes conflict resolution skills, coping and refusal skills, character education, diversity, and study skills. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of group guidance philosophies Knowledge of normal developmental milestones for school aged children Knowledge of individual and group counseling techniques Knowledge of students' academic, social and emotional needs Knowledge of community resources for school aged students and their families Communicates effectively with students, parents, faculty and supervisors ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Counseling/Assessment/Outreach Fosters the personal growth, educational development, and emotional well-being of all students Provides one-to-one and group counseling to students who need support in areas such as social skills, grief/healing, transition, and anger management Creates a positive, caring and nurturing learning environment for all students Consult with teachers, staff, parents and other significant people regarding the needs of students Participates in appropriate meetings concerning student placement and programs Collaborates with community resources to provide support for students dealing with family issues such as family change, grief, homelessness, abuse, alcoholism or incarceration Provides family outreach and serves as a school-family liaison in situations where parents are unable or hesitant to become involved with the school Makes arrangements for hospital or homebound instruction when needed and provides liaison service for school and treatment-related situations Career and Post-High School Counseling (secondary grade level only) Arranges for representatives from post-high school institutions and the military services to come in to visit with interested students Provides financial aid information, materials, and direction to students and parents Writes letters of recommendation for current and past students for employment, post-high, and scholarship applications Assists classroom teachers in planning/implementing career instruction Maintains up-to-date materials on careers and training programs in Guidance Center Promotes teachers' use of career materials in the classroom Coordinates student involvement in community career explorer posts Organizes in-school career seminars for various career clusters Reviews credits and approves diplomas for students who are completing work at the Area Learning Center; holds re-entry conferences for any students returning to the mainstream from ALC Dispenses information to students about individual courses, assists them individually to choose those courses best suited to their individual needs and goals; registers all students Reviews curriculum changes and course offerings for registration information booklet Provides pre-registration materials to non-public schools for any incoming freshmen Promotes and Recognition of Student Achievement (secondary grade level only) Disseminates information and guidance regarding scholarships, honors and recognition Selects and identifies students receiving honors Serves on local scholarship committee Conducts Awards Program Registration & Curriculum Involvement Makes recommendations for needed changes in master schedule for the following year and assists administrat on in preparation of schedules and class lists for opening of school Inservice and Professional Development Participates in data retreats and leadership/intervention teams to respond to the needs of the students and set site improvement goals Provides in-service education to other school personnel to enhance their ability to promote healthy functioning and respond appropriately to student difficulties Participates, as necessary, in orientation sessions for new teachers and student teachers Represents guidance department on various faculty committees Acts as resource person for college classes or other interested groups Participates in the planning, implementation, evaluation and revision of district-wide comprehensive, developmental group guidance curriculum Maintenance of Records Keeps accurate records of grades and credits for all students Approves all requests for transcripts Maintains official class rank Keeps accurate and up-to-date student accountability records and compiles a report on each graduating class Completes guidance department annual report for Superintendent Other duties as assigned PHYSICAL FACTORS: Frequent: walking, standing, sitting, hearing, talking, and seeing All Employees of Saint Cloud School District 742 are responsible to support District goals, to work collaboratively and respectfully with diverse populations of staff, students and parents and to model and promote a welcoming working and learning environment.
