Baystate Health Child Life Specialist - Float in Springfield, Massachusetts

We are looking for a Child Life Specialist - Float to join our Child Life team!

New Child Life grad applicants will be considered.

$4,000 Sign-on Bonus (external and internal eligible candidates)

SCHEDULE:

30-hour benefited position with potential for additional hours as needed.

Schedule will consistently include every 3rd Wednesday, and every 3rd Sunday in the Pediatric Emergency Department. 12 hour shifts - 11:30a-12a. Remaining hours will be varied with advanced notice of schedule, providing child life focused support to children and families in all pediatric areas based on staffing needs/gaps. Shifts may fall between 6a and 12a and may be 6, 8, 10 or 12 hours in length, depending on unit being covered.

Some weekend shifts required. Participation in team holiday rotation required.

Includes weekend and evening shift differentials plus additional allowance to accommodate variable schedule.

Extensive full time orientation offered along with participation in department mentorship program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Child Life or a related field required, Master’s Degree preferred.

Certification as a Certified Child Life Specialist through the Association of Child Life Professionals required. Will hire certification-eligible candidates who meet all requirements for certification, including completion of minimum of 600 hour child life internship, and who pass the ACLP certification exam within one year of hire. (1 year of CCLS experience preferred)

BLS/CPR certification required.

Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Summary:

The Child Life Specialist is responsible for the provision of child life focused care to children and their families served in a variety of health care settings. Individualized, therapeutic interventions are facilitated through collaboration with the patient, family, and health care team members. The choice of play outlets, educational approaches, and emotional support are built upon a strong foundation child life theory and expertise gained through ongoing practice experiences and intentional commitment to ongoing child life education. The child life specialist functions as an integral partner of the health care team, facilitating patient- and family-centered support and advocating and enabling psychosocially sound practices across the continuum of care.

CCLS I - Proficient Practice: The child life specialist practicing at this level is applying skills and knowledge obtained through her/his internship, previous employment, or obtained during period since employment at Baystate Health System. This clinician requires ongoing direct education and mentoring by senior child life specialists and health care team colleagues. This description covers the essential functions of the position. The incumbent is expected to perform similar and related duties as assigned. The Child Life Manager is responsible for ensuring that the child life specialist consistently meets the necessary behaviors

Additional information:

The Child Life Specialist in this role will serve as a float CCLS, flexibly providing child life focused supports within all areas that receive Child Life Services within the Baystate System as needed/assigned.

Candidate will require strong skills in communication, advocacy, time management, prioritization, and ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team and community resources. Must be creative, flexible, and independent.

Must be highly engaged with child life role and bring an energetic, professional demeanor to each encounter.

Must have knowledge of trauma-informed care and patient and family centered care principles, and be prepared to support children and families through medical procedures, trauma, injury, acute and chronic illness, loss, bereavement, preventative care in a variety of healthcare settings.

Additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned and as needed to support department needs.

30 hours/week, part time, benefited, hourly position with opportunity for additional hours when needed/agreed upon. Shifts will fall between 6am and 12am

Minimum of three weekend days a month required.

Schedule will be flexible to meet needs of the department and shifts will be determined a minimum of one month in advance, with some flexibility.

Some holiday coverage required (2 holidays/year within team holiday rotation) including additional holiday compensation.

Eligible for participation in Child Life Clinical Recognition program with opportunities to advance on the CLHA Department's clinical ladder.
