South Carolina State Job Bank Material Handler in Spartanburg, South Carolina

**SUMMARY The primary purpose of the Material Handler position is to help facilitate quality orders that are shipped on time by loading, unloading, kitting, and moving materials within or near plant, yard, or work site and by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Others may be assigned.

  • Reads traveler or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved.
  • Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand.
  • Loads materials into vehicles or pallets and installs strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
  • Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated area.
  • Counts and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet.
  • Operates forklift to load truck, and to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
  • Performs kitting function for work cells in designated area.

**SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

**EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

**LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

**MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

**REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

**CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Licensed Forklift Operator.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate a forklift and/or a pallet jack. The employee frequently is required to move and retrieve. The employee is occasionally required to stay in a stationary position; ascend or work atop; and stoop or traverse. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
