At WSP in Shropshire our Highway Development Control Team support Shropshire Council in the adoption of highways under Section 38 and Section 278 applications. Having recently secured the Term Maintenance Contract for a 5 year period, and potentially longer, we are looking to expand our team and grow into a multifunctional department to support our contractual function and beyond.

WSP’s office, based in the rural town of Shrewsbury, is integrated with the Client due to our longstanding relationship and collaborative working practices. The existing team provides a supporting environment and actively promotes professional development across a diverse range of interesting projects.

You will be working within a team of multi-skilled and experienced people of varying grades in a positive team environment. This role will be client facing and you will be involved in the delivery of technical appraisals concerning all Section 38 and Section 278 applications. You will be able to demonstrate a track record of delivering high quality work in multiple disciplines within civil engineering and competence in CDM.

The role is Senior Engineer position leading on the delivery of technical support to the Client. We are seeking an individual suitable to manage multiple applications and deliver them to a high-quality standard complying with multiple legislations and design standards. The role would involve a pragmatic, expert approach with background knowledge of multidisciplinary areas to encompass the whole site. The role will also involve communication with the Client, Developers and external Designers where required.

The role will also involve communication with the Client, Developers and external Designers where required.

  • Have excellent technical knowledge of Highway Engineering and the multiple disciplines associated with highway infrastructure.

  • Ability to technically review and report on proposed Section 38 & 278 development applications.

  • Excellent report writing skills.

  • Manage and distribute technical appraisals efficiently and in a timely manner to the Client.

  • Ability to produce bond calculations and commuted sum calculations in relation to all applications.

  • Excellent communication skills between Clients, Developers and Designers.

  • Attend bi-weekly Client meetings to discuss potential or ongoing issues arising from Section 38 & 278 developments.

  • Competent using DMRB, Manual for street 1 and 2, and the Local Authorities current specification for adoptable highways (SMART manual).

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office, Excel, and Microsoft Teams.

  • Excellent working knowledge of Health, Safety and Welfare and CDM responsibilities

  • A Degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering (or other relevant discipline) with CEng, or IEng or be actively working towards a professional qualification with a relevant professional institution.

  • You will need to demonstrate the ability to independently deliver projects, technical excellence, and innovation.

  • Experience and knowledge in drainage and highway engineering projects.

  • Experience and a working knowledge of relevant design standards.

  • Work effectively as a valued member of the team and develop and maintain excellent working relationships with other teams, client and developers.

  • Good communication skills and fluent in spoken and written English are essential.

  • A full valid UK driving licence is required.
