Amazon Systems Development Engineer II, GCNA in Seattle, Washington

Description

As a Systems Development Engineer of the Internet Edge team, you will work hand-in-hand with Software Development and Network Engineering teams to develop solution architectures, while also helping to automate and invent new ways of operating Amazon AWS network. You’ll apply your large-scale understanding of computing solutions to write code and manage services that delight our customers.

AWS Global Connectivity and Network Availability (GCNA) is the backbone that connects the global AWS network. It is dedicated to controlling the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world. GCNA is responsible for building and designing a complex backbone network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between Data Centers and customers.

Key job responsibilities

You will be responsible for the design, implementation and quality of services you deliver. Your experience working in a systems development or in an enterprise environment will help us implement automated solutions across a variety of applications and systems.

You’ll also:

• Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.

• Write high quality distributed system software.

• Work in an agile, startup-like development environment, where you are always working on the most important stuff.

• Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast and smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.

• Use data to measure success and take responsibility for the quality of your service and, regardless of their source, strive to prevent faults from impacting your customers.

• Use your strong problem-solving skills, ability to understand and scope solutions, work across teams to drive solutions.

• Contribute to documentation of process and procedures.

• Learn from others and help grow those in your team to achieve their best.

• Take ownership, consider tradeoffs and lean on your expertise to ensure the job gets done.

• Participate in an on-call rotation with your team.

A day in the life

Engineers in the Internet Edge organization have a wide range of responsibilities; We evolve routing policy, implement traffic engineering solutions, grow our peering footprint, secure the “front door” from bad actors on the Internet, and architect the hardware platforms and network design to support any Amazon product that needs to reach end-users worldwide. Our work delivers complex solutions so employees have network capacity that stays ahead of demand, through infrastructure that moves terabits of traffic to-and-from the internet across the globe on one of the world's-largest networks. Internet Edge engineers make decisions on both a day-to-day and long-term strategic basis, which carries a large amount of responsibility and impact across all of Amazon’s products.

Within AWS Networking, the Internet Edge organization is responsible for connecting Amazon to the global Internet. With connections to thousands of unique external networks in hundreds of locations across the world, our mission is to deliver an internet connectivity experience that sets the global standard for performance, availability, security, and cost, making Amazon the clear choice for our customers. Our team provides high-performing Internet connectivity for a wide range of use cases, such as retail (amazon.com), video streaming (Prime Video), content delivery (CloudFront), DNS (Route53), AWS services (i.e. EC2/S3), consumer devices (i.e. as FireTV/Kindle/Echo), and more.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Seattle, WA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby

  • 1+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or relevant degree/experience.

  • • 3+ years of programming/scripting experience with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell or Ruby.

  • • 3+ years of experience in monitoring, troubleshooting and resolving system and software components.

  • • 3+ years of experience deploying and operating Linux, and operating system fundamentals.

  • • 2+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.

  • • Strong, object-oriented design and coding skills.

  • • Proficient at designing software systems, from high-availability large-scale distributed systems to your application’s object model.

  • • Experience with high scalable distributed architectures.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $103,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
