This position is responsible for assisting the Anesthesiologist in all departments and with all anesthesia procedures, including expediting patient flow through the perioperative area, maintaining patient safety, developing and maintaining external (patient, surgeon) and internal (Anesthesiologist, staff) customer satisfaction. Assists with patient flow in perioperative area including transporting patients in and out of the surgical suite, maintaining accountability for specific patients and surgical suites, and assisting other Technicians in providing service to patients. Preps patient for insertion of invasive lines. Sets up necessary procedure carts with aseptic technique. Sets up, calibrates and verifies function of anesthesia machines, invasive/non-invasive blood pressure monitors, ETCO2 and SPO2 monitors, autotransfusion equipment, etc. Assists Anesthesiologists with procedures such as radial or femoral arterial lines, central lines, swan-ganz catheters and temporary pacer insertions. Also assists in setting up and preparing supplies for the physicians for spinal epidurals, regional blocks, intubations. Also assists Anesthesiologists with monitoring patient status. Performs CPR as needed. Initiates monitoring of patients by attaching EKG electrodes connecting invasive/non-invasive blood pressure monitoring, as well as pulse oximetry and ETCO2. Assists with positioning of patients for surgical procedures. Responsible for maintaining patient airway, as necessary. Sets up and operates Autotransfusion equipment, including Cell Saver. Responsible for printing out hemo-dynamic data collection including pressure gradient recordings and cardiac outputs. May be directed to draw a blood sample from an existing line and process blood gases, electrolytes, ACT's and communicate results. May draw other blood specimens from existing lines as needed. Responsible for troubleshooting anesthesia equipment problems and making minor repairs. Assists with transport of all invasively monitored patients to the OR from ICU's and Heart Center. Also transports invasive monitored patients from the OR to the ICU. Responsible for responding to all codes in Surgery. Participates in "call" rotation for continuous Perioperative Support Technologists (PST) at night, on weekends, and holidays. Perioperative Support Techs must be ready to participate in call schedule in nine months or less. Assists with training and orientation of new Perioperative Support Techs. Accepts room assignments, as requested by OR Director or designee. Successful completion of an on the job Anesthesia Technology (AT) training program. Assist at any other locations using anesthesia.
