SUMMARY This Job Description provides a description of the duties for which the Material Handler I will be accountable and responsible. The intent of this Job Description is to enable the Employee to be successful within the chain of command, by promoting transparent, effective, efficient, and quality corporate operations. Other duties may be assigned to theMaterial Handler I from time to time: these additional duties will be communicated directly from the Plant Operations Manager, Foreman or Leadman. If these duties are considered to be of an essential and recurring nature, and merit assigning responsibility, this Job Description will be revised accordingly.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION Vital Link Inc.'s core business is in the fabrication, maintenance, and installation of jet engine test facilities and sound suppression systems. This requires that the corporation support both field and plant operations, while operating both in a commercial and military environment on a worldwide basis. Plant operations includes a Manufacturing Material Handling Department which performs the unloading and handling of structural steel shapes, bulk goods, sheet metal, and similar goods, and finished manufactured assemblies such as structural steel, fabricated weldments, large acoustic assemblies such as panels and baffles, and manufactured silencer ducts and tubes. The Material Handler I in general shall be responsible for unloading and material handling of raw materials and finished assemblies as outlined above, general manual labor duties typical to a manufacturing operation as assigned and performing other duties under the supervisory direction of the Plant Operations Manager, Foreman or Leadman.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform all material handling duties assigned by management. This includes but is not limited to unloading trucks, material handling and movement in the plant, picking and retrieving materials for distribution to the various work stations for the performance of manufacturing processes.
- Report all goods picked from inventory to the Inventory Control Department or departmental manager in accordance with company procedures, to ensure all such transfers are properly tracked and accounted for.
- Notify and coordinate with other manufacturing material handling personnel prior to and during unloading of raw materials to ensure that all goods delivered to the plant can be properly identified, received, and tracked.
- During the manufacturing process, move raw materials and partially completed goods in between workstations such as pre-fabrication, fitup, welding, blast and paint, and assembly.
- Move and handle finished manufactured goods from the production work station to the appropriate staging area for packaging/crating, storage or loading for shipment as appropriate;
- Follow appropriate procedures for safe rigging, strapping, picking and movement of goods during all stages of the material handling process.
- Operate overhead cranes, forklifts and other handling equipment as required to perform the duties described in this job description. The Material Handler I shall only operate equipment for which they have been trained and/or certified. All operations shall be performed in accordance with company procedures and appropriate safety requirements. Under supervisory direction and in coordination with the Shipping and Receiving Department, properly load materials and items onto trucks for shipping.
- Perform general labor duties as assigned. This may include cleanup, assisting journeyman in any plant department by providing manual labor, or other tasks within the employees general training and capabilities.
- Keep work area tidy and orderly, perform routine cleaning and housekeeping; Operate equipment in a safe manner and use personal protective equipment as required.
- Coordinate and cooperate with other Plant Operations, Shipping and Receiving, and Inventory Control personnel to perform required work duties.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
- Ensure activities are conducted in accordance with Vital Link International Standards Organization (ISO9000) policies and correct and report any deviations to appropriate area manager/supervisor.
ISO9000 SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Be familiar with and understand Vital Link Quality Policy and company objectives.
- Understand required ISO9000 specific Procedures and Work Instructions.
- Complete all records required by Procedures and Work Instructions.
- Participate in Vital Link Continuous Improvement activities as appropriate.
- Participate in ISO9000 training as required.
- Cooperate with Auditors.
- Report any deviations to appropriate area manager/supervisor.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); One (1) years experience in material handling, inventory control or shipping and receiving preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Certified fork lift operator is required. This may be obtained after hire. Warehouse Picking.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Employee is frequently required to stand, sit, stoop, crouch, bend, walk; and routinely lift and/or move up to (40) pounds.
- Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor. Should have the ability to operate hand and power tools required to perform general labor activities. Must also have command of sight and touch. Employee must have the ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with other personnel.
- Should be able to properly lift moderate and heavy steel parts, equipment, and supplies on a routine basis. Typical lifting requirements will not exceed forty (40) pounds.
- The employee must have a full range of body movements including the use of hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, climbing, bending, reaching, lifting and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This position will be working primarily in a covered manufacturing facility with some work occurring outdoors, potentially in all types of weather. This position is exposed to dust and exhaust fumes. The position may require the use of safety glasses and protective clothing.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually high, which may require hearing protection.
- Usually eight (8) hour workdays (5) days per week are required. Occasional Saturday and Sunday work, or overtime, may be required to accommodate special business circumstances including the requirement to assume management responsibilities in the absence of the Shipping and Receiving Manager.
- Extended work hours and/or travel may occasionally be required.
