Ellis Medicine Physical Therapist-Emergency Department in Schenectady, New York

Under the direction of the Supervisor and Director of the Rehabilitation Services Department, the physical therapist is responsible for providing, arranging for, teaching and supervising physical therapy services through the process of assessment, planning and implementation. He/she provides advisory service to other professionals who share responsibility for patient care and participates in the development of the rehabilitation program.

This position provides primary PT coverage for the Emergency Department and Observation Unit. The therapist is responsible for screening, assisting with discharge planning and facilitating care plan for patients not admitted to the hospital or admitted to observation. Prior work experience in the ED/OBS setting preferred but not required. Support and Training will be provided for this role.

Secondary responsibility will be for coverage of the PACU, pre/post-operative units.

This position requires a dynamic therapist who can assist the team to facilitate appropriate discharge disposition and positively impact hospital length of stay.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):

  • A physical therapist must have a minimum of four (4) years of education beyond high school attaining Bachelor of Science degree, Master of Science, Doctor of or Certificate of Physical Therapy from a college with a program approved by the American Physical Therapy Association.

  • They must be licensed to practice physical therapy in/by the State of New York.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Should be able to push/pull, lift/move 35 lb., be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

  • Physical Therapist provides evaluation and treatment according to approval practices, policies, and procedures of the Physical Therapy Department of Ellis Hospital and New York State law. Demonstrates skills and abilities to assess and treat toddler, school age child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

  • Teaches appropriate treatment procedures and supportive activities to patients and caregivers.

  • Provides information about payment sources and helps interpret extent and limitations of service available and promotes patient/family acceptance of appropriate level of care.

  • Enters Patient care/progress notes in patient chart according to policies and procedures of the Rehabilitation Services department, Organizational policy and to standards of practice.

  • Contacts and notifies appropriate members of the health care team regarding patient’s progress or significant changes in patient’s status.

  • Interacts with family members as well as the patient in providing appropriate education and/or information consistent with diagnosis and standards of practice.

  • Uses appropriate communication techniques based on patient’s age and condition.

  • Appropriately documents correct patient charges for services administered, as observed by the Supervisor/Director of Rehabilitation Services Department.

  • Provides in-service education programs as required and requested, i.e., participate in staff in-service programs to maintain current knowledge, pertinent to the profession.

    Salary Range: $36.07-$54.10/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
