Bachelor’s degree
5 years of relevant experience in custodial operations or facilities management, with knowledge of custodial industry standards, safety practices, and custodial procedures.
Minimum of 3 years of supervisory and personnel management experience.
Strong skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and familiarity with custodial equipment, tools, and materials.
Ability to foster a collaborative, team-oriented work environment with strong leadership and relationship-building skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree
Certified Educational Facilities Professional ( CEFP ) credential or similar certification.
Experience using and creating electronic QA programs, process evaluation, and policy development to enhance custodial operations.
Knowledge to create and deliver training, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and industry standards.
Experience in setting short- and long-term goals, organizing resources, managing time & attendance and work order scheduling.
Bilingual in Spanish
Job Description
The Assistant Director for Housing Custodial Operations at Texas State University manages custodial supervisors and effectively manages custodial operations across 26 residential buildings totaling approximately 2.5 million square feet. This role involves supervisory oversight, quality assurance, and operational efficiency, focusing on team development of over 80 custodians, process improvements, and alignment with organizational goals and departmental priorities. The position also supports the physical expansion of on-campus housing while fostering effective relationships in a fast-paced service environment, ensuring a clean, safe, and healthy environment for faculty, staff, and students. This position will report to the Associate Director of Housing Facilities Services.
Job Duties
Custodial Operations
Supervise custodial crew supervisors, who are directly responsible for managing front-line staff, ensuring effective scheduling, performance reviews, and work allocation.
Ensure custodial supervisors conduct regular quality assurance inspections.
Develop training and performance improvement plans for custodial staff.
Monitor the execution of daily work tasks, schedules, and staffing to ensure operational efficiency and adherence to established standards.
Assist crew supervisors in identifying and addressing performance management, cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and overall facility conditions.
Contributes to developing and implementing custodial standards and procedures, ensuring consistency across all facilities.
Recommend process improvements based on operational feedback and industry best practices.
Serve in after-hours on-call rotation. This position is an essential personnel report to work during declared periods of inclement weather as required.
Cross-Functional Services Management
Serves as a liaison between custodial supervisors and other department leaders to ensure custodial services are aligned with broader departmental needs.
Assists in addressing escalated customer service issues related to custodial operations, collaborating with supervisors to ensure timely resolution.
Participate in cross-departmental meetings and committees to represent custodial services and provide operational input as needed.
Supervision and Workforce Management
Works with custodial supervisors to assess staff performance and identify areas for growth, guiding corrective actions and development opportunities.
Supports the Director in developing training programs promoting continuous learning and professional growth.
Review performance metrics to ensure custodial operations meet departmental quality and service delivery expectations.
Departmental Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Director of Housing Facilities Services in developing annual budgets, focusing on resource needs, supply procurement, and operational efficiency.
Assists in monitoring expenditures to ensure alignment with departmental budgets and resource management strategies.
Serve on the Housing Facilities Services leadership team and ensure proper service delivery, accountability, and support for front-line staff and residents.
Represent Housing and Residential Life at the university, divisional, or departmental committees.
