Rock West Composites, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for aNDT Inspector III.

Rock West Composites, Inc. is an engineering and manufacturing company dedicated to providing innovative solutions for commercial and government customers. This position is located in our San Diego North office at 7919 Saint Andrews Ave San Diego, CA and reports to the Quality Manager.

Position Summary:

The Level-III (UT-C) NDT Inspector will develop, implement, and maintain all NDT procedures to meet customer requirements and specifications. As the responsible Level-III technician, they will oversee NDT personnel, including their training and records, and manage NDT operations, primarily focusing on ultrasonics (UT-C). The role requires coordination with managers, department leads, and team members to ensure all jobs are tested according to specifications and requirements. This position demands certification to NDT Level III standards, including ASNT-TC-1A, NAS-410, or DoD guidelines in ultrasonic inspections (UT-C). The Inspector will report to the Quality Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure NDT processes and procedures comply with customer-specific and NADCAP certification requirements. Serve as the primary contact for NADCAP and customer audits and inquiries related to NDT.
  • Develop, review, and approve NDT Level II-generated technique sheets and procedures for ultrasonic inspections, ensuring alignment with customer engineering and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to develop and approve NDT Reference Standards, securing customer approvals when necessary for evaluating production parts.
  • Interface directly with customers to obtain Level III approvals for NDT technique sheets and reference standards, specifically for ultrasonic inspection (C-scan and A-scan) on composite materials like carbon fiber, honeycomb aluminum, and metal-bonded assemblies.
  • Oversee the NDI department and NDT Level II inspectors, ensuring high performance and adherence to standards.
  • Operate and maintain C-scan (MATEC) and A-scan (OMNI) ultrasonic inspection equipment.
  • Interpret and communicate inspection findings to quality, production, and engineering teams, ensuring timely problem resolution.
  • Review and interpret engineering drawings as required, ensuring compliance with customer specifications.
  • Support RandD efforts to implement future ultrasonic technologies, such as magnetic particle inspection (MPI or MT) and fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI or PT).
  • Assist in training and developing team members to enhance overall departmental performance.
  • Review and approve work instructions, orders, procedures, forms, and other documentation to ensure compliance with customer requirements and AS9100 Rev D standards.
  • Conduct internal audits against the quality management system, AS9100 standards, and other relevant standards.
  • Support quality assurance activities, including risk management, configuration control, training, auditing, corrective actions, continuous improvement, and preventive actions.
  • Assist in the material review board process to properly disposition nonconforming products, processes, and services.
  • Perform in-depth root cause and corrective action analysis using tools such as 5 Whys and Ishikawa diagrams.
  • Manage supplier and customer-issued corrective actions, including evaluating special processes like NDT/NDI at internal and external suppliers.
  • Conduct supplier audits to assess compliance with quality standards, supporting supplier selection and improvement initiatives.
  • Facilitate part movement between processes to meet contractual schedules and lead continuous improvement efforts with suppliers.
  • Foster an engaged and energized workforce by promoting a positive attitude.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety guidelines, policies, and laws as determined by the company, state, and federal authorities.
  • Comply with Rock West C mposites' company policies, procedures, and code of business conduct.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelors degree in aerospace, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering preferred.
  • NDE Level III certification per ASNT-TC-1A, NAS-410, or DoD guidance in ultrasonic inspections (UT) required.
  • 5-10 years in aerospace quality, particularly in inspecting composites, sheet metal components, and assemblies.
  • Familiarity with aerospace prime NDT specifications, such as Boeings BAC5968, BAC5980, and DPS4.738, as well as Northrop's ACS-PRS-7001, is highly preferred.
  • Experience with composite materials and processes like autoclave, RTM, compression molding, laminate, and metal-bonded assemblies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience with lean manufacturing methods, such as 5S and Kaizen, is desirable.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or a lawful permanent resident.
  • Team player with a proactive attitude: hungry, humble, and people-smart.
  • Ability to collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders, including Quality Assurance, Operations, Program Management, Engineering, and Estimating teams.
  • Self-motivated, organized, with strong attention to detail and high accuracy.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to set and achieve objectives independently.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities and able to work extended hours when necessary to meet deadlines.

Compensation:

The compensation range for this position falls within $105,000 and $135,000. The final compensation will be determined based on experience, skillset, and other factors permitted by law.
