WSP USA Early Career Environmental Planner in San Diego, California

Our Environmental Planning Team is seeking an entry level environmental planning consultant to work out of our San Diego office.

This environmental planning position will provide an opportunity to work on local and regional projects across business sectors including Buildings, Water, Transportation, and Infrastructure. Projects will include program planning, local development, storm water management, complete streets, carbon capture, general plan updates, infrastructure improvements, and environmental bridging documents. Ideal candidates have experience, or an interest in growing their skills, in the following areas:

  • Environmental Policy

  • Local, State, and Federal Environmental Regulations

  • Infrastructure Funding

  • Environmental Justice and Equity

  • Sustainable Practices

  • Resiliency Planning

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learn basic principles of environmental planning with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.

  • Prepare planning studies, technical studies, and environmental documents in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and California Environmental Policy Act (CEQA).

  • Assist with project research, data collection, preliminary analysis, and presentations to internal teams, management, and clients.

  • Assist in managing small to medium task assignments, preparing materials for dissemination to technical teams and clients, compiling data, presenting findings, and completing project documentation.

  • Complete training on assigned tasks.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

  • Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this position.

Minimum Qualifications (Please add any additional qualifications as applicable)

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited Environmental Planning, Urban or Regional Planning, Environmental Policy, Environmental Science, or related, Undergraduate program.

  • Demonstrated interest in environmental policy and planning, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.

  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Capable of taking direction from leadership and managers to execute assignments.

  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited environmental planning, urban or regional planning, or environmental policy master’s or PhD program.

  • Experience using ArcGIS and Adobe Illustrator.

  • Prior volunteer or leadership involvement on or off-campus.

  • Experience working with public agencies is a plus.

  • Strong research, analysis, and writing skills.

  • Strong critical, strategic, and creative thinking skills to reach conclusions from survey results and data collection.

  • Ability to identify the most effective solutions to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $81,500-$49,400

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
