General Atomics ALRE Systems Project Engineer in San Diego, California
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Systems Project Engineer in the GA-EMS Systems Engineering department. The candidate with previous Systems Engineering experience or technical project engineering experience will focus on supporting the U.S. Navy Ford-class Aircraft Launch and Recovery (ALRE) carrier programs. This team member is responsible for evaluating changes needed to the U.S. Navy ALRE baselines for modernization or enhancements in reliability and/or robustness and presenting those changes in the form of an Engineering Change Proposal (ECP). This team member is responsible for the transition of an ECP from development phase to implementation phase within the GA-EMS functional engineering organization. Also, this team member will assist in troubleshooting efforts to assist the fleet with operations/restoration of operations.
With limited direction, this position exercises considerable latitude in analyzing the technical objectives for the review, research, design, development, and/or solution to advanced technical engineering problem(s). May also function in an advisory or project leadership role, providing direction to experienced professional staff and/or leadership to junior professional staff. This opening can be at our Rancho Bernardo, CA or Lakehurst, NJ locations.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide technical analyses and judgement, using a systems engineering approach, for the development, fabrication, testing, and integration of new or existing systems within GA-EMS.
Coordinate and interface with customers, contractors, and engineering groups assigned to projects.
Represent the organization as the prime technical contact.
Assist with developing program plans, estimates, and schedules.
Ability to perform system analysis, develop system designs, and generate system and sub-system level requirements to disseminate among subsystem design architects.
Support the development of test plans and manage the integration, verification and validation of systems through qualification testing.
Development and presentation of technical material for design reviews, including presenting to the customer.
Plans and coordinates the maintenance of engineering solutions including, documentation, reporting, publishing, and making technical and other presentations to ensure viability of the solution(s) in an evolving environment.
Directs activities of design or technical staff and lead junior professional staff.
Plans for future applications of solutions based on new developments in engineering technology.
Participates in or may lead the development of new or expansion of existing business opportunities.
Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

Job Qualifications:
Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; twelve or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, ten or more years of experience with a masters degree, or seven or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.
Must have a complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or at the project level, to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area; lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks; collaborate with other subject matter experts and provide/be subjected to objective peer review. Must effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals and have the capability of representing the organization as a prime technical contact
Ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads, most often among parallel project demands, to meet deadlines or milestones, with experience in project leadership.
Able to work extended hours as required to support design reviews or milestone deliverables.
Travel within the U.S. estimated to be up to 10% of annual working hours.
Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. Secret Clearance.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated experience in the application of IEEE Standard 1233, Guide for Developing System Requirements Specifications;
Demonstrated experience in the application of IEEE Standard 15288.2, Standard for Technical Reviews and Audits on Defense Programs;
Demonstrated experience in the application of the NAVAIR Systems Engineering Technical Reviews (SETR) process per NAVAIR SETR Process Handbook.
