Description

GENERAL PURPOSE Performs lifeguard duties, enforces park rules, and monitors patron behavior and safety. Maintains a safe swimming environment for the public, mitigating risks, and observing hazardous and life threatening situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides quality customer service and public education on water safety to park visitors.
  • Enforces park rules, monitors patron behavior, and promptly responds to hazardous situations and accidents.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the beachfront area, docks, restrooms, and adjacent areas of the park.  
  • Ensures park safety for all visitors and reports maintenance needs or hazards to supervisor.
  • Maintains appropriate records including daily logs of beach attendance and incident/accident reports related to beach activities.
  • Oversees the use, care and inventory of city supplies and all beachfront equipment.
  • Opens and secures the facilities as needed.
  • Performs custodial duties as needed.  
  • Attends and participates in pre-season training and weekly in-service training programs.  
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • May be required to attend evening and/or weekend meetings and events based on organizational responsibilities and/or requirements.

      SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

     

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be 16 years of age at the commencement of employment.    Enrollment in high school or an equivalent education program required; supplemented by one (1) year / season of lifeguard experience, preferably at a beach park; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.   *Employees must be residents of Washington State. *   CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Must possess valid and current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid and American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Northwest Lifeguard Test certification.  

      KNOWLEDGE OF

Techniques of lifeguarding, use of related equipment, and processes for monitoring swimmers. 

Safety practices and precautions related to beachfront activities.

Identifying swimmers in hazardous and life-threatening situations and ability to react quickly, calmly, and with application of the appropriate response protocols.
