Position Summary

 

Thales is looking for aSenior System Engineer who would act at the Product Design Authority (PDA) for our Navigation product line as part of our NAS (Navigation And non-radar Surveillance) business located onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah. Thales Navigation And non-radar Surveillance (NAS) business segment, part of the Thales Land and Air Systems Global Business Unit, architects solutions used by over two-thirds of all planes worldwide to take off and land safely. Our Ground Navigation portfolio offers a complete range of products, which includes the latest generation of ground-based navigational aids (NAVAIDs) (e.g. ILS, DME, TACAN & VOR) and non-radar surveillance (e.g. ADS-B). With more than 10,000 NAVAIDs and non-radar surveillance installed worldwide in 180 countries, we are world leaders in the NAVAIDs market. The Senior System Engineer / Project Design Authority (PDA) is technically responsible to validate technical choices, organize technical peer reviews, alert on any technical risks in the project and drive corrective actions. The PDA serves as the main interface towards the customer to clarify/negotiate technical scope in order to reduce technical risks and costs. They have domain expertise and work closely with the architect to ensure design compliance with customers needs, product policy, make/buy/footprint, etc. and with the Delivery Manager to plan all technical reviews and consider risk actions in the delivery program. The PDA would be an active participant in the development and management of Thales latest generation of NAVAID systems as part of the global NAVAIDs Design Authority team. Lifelong learner is key for this role since the PDA needs to have a broad perspective of the technology and product line.

 

In this position, you would work alongside that of the development teams. The PDA would act as a peer, a decision-maker, and a guarantor of the performance of the system with respect to the client. In addition, this role has a Thales NAS global component, in which the PDA would have contact with PDA peers in Europe as well as the development teams and the client. Autonomy, leadership, an ability to work in a team in an international context, an ability to convince, a concern for meeting objectives, and a thirst for innovation are the keys to success in this position. The PDA will report directly to the Salt Lake City based Engineering Manager of Thales NAS business segment.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Be the Product Design Authority/Owner for one of the Thales product lines.
  • Support proposal/capture efforts including being the referent for understanding context and customer needs.
  • Be the main technical leader of a proposal effort and/or project team depending on the current need.
  • Act as technical Point-Of-Contact (POC) for Thales customers for all things NAVAIDS related.
  • Contribute to system level integration in terms of requirements/system knowledge and expectations and support the execution of hardware and software integration projects and programs.
  • Author technical documents (e.g. SSDDs).

     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in Systems, Electrical, Software Engineering, or other technical field with a minimum f 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience acting as a technical referent (i.e. Product Design Authority/Owner) in an international organization.
  • Excellent communication, synthesis and organizational skills allowing for an understanding of related subjects which would then allow the Senior Systems Engineer to be the source of proposals to guide and develop activities while taking into account all aspects.
  • Ability to multitask across the organization, local and global, on various technical and non-technical subject matters.
  • Experience with requirement management tools, configuration management tools, technical documentation tools, and problem reporting tool.
  • Must be a US Person as defined in applicable law. Must be a U.S. Person as defined in applicable law, or otherwise authorized or eligible for authorization, to access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).

     

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: Mon-Thu with alternating Fri on a 9/80 schedule, or Mon-Fri on a 5/40 schedule.
  • Physical Environment: Primarily in Salt Lake City, UT office on a hybrid work schedule.
  • Travel: Travel: Anticipated to be less than 10% annually. Trips can be both domestic and international travel and less than 5 days in length, with international trips up to 7 days in length.
