The Deseret News Publishing Company seeks a smart, detail-oriented, and proactive individual to fill a crucial role on our accounting team. The senior accountant will help ensure we have accurate and timely financial reports and data, thus enabling strong financial stewardship and informed decision-making throughout the organization.

This position reports to the controller.  You will operate as an experienced individual contributor and will also review staff accountant journal entries.  This position has high visibility within the organization, interacting with the company CFO, departmental leadership, and parent company professionals. 

This is a full-time hybrid position based in our downtown Salt Lake City office. Initially, you will work in-office four days per week, with the flexibility to work from home one day per week.  Eventually, this position will allow you to work in-office three days a week, with the flexibility to work from home two days per week.

This role will challenge you to:

• Support month-end and year-end close

• Prepare financial statements, journal entries and account reconciliations

• Assess internal controls, including risk assessments and reviews of risk areas

• Assist with annual budget/plan preparation and prepare monthly budget variance analysis

• Assist with monthly forecast and preparing monthly forecast variance analysis

• Maintain and reconcile fixed assets schedules

• Review staff accountant journal entries

• Prepare year-end schedules for parent company

• Manage intercompany accounting

• Assist in identifying opportunities to streamline processes and utilize technology to achieve greater efficiency

   

You're a good fit if you have:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting

• Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles

• 5-10 years' experience in accounting including maintaining general ledgers, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, variance analysis and reporting

• Experience as a contributor in annual budget/plan

• Experience as a contributor in monthly/quarterly forecast

• Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word & PowerPoint)

• Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks

• Works well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment

• High degree of attention to detail

• Ability to analyze large data sets

• Strong time management and organizational skills

   

You're an even better fit if you have:

• CPA license and/or master's degree in accounting or business

• Supervisory experience

• Financial modeling experience

• Publishing and/or advertising industry experience

• Experience in a contributor role in ERP system implementation

• ASC 606 Revenue Recognition exposure

• Accounting research and application experience
