Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing both primary and specialty medical services. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.

Performs physical examinations.

Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.

Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.

Reaches tentative diagnosis of medical, surgical and other conditions.

Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management.

Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.

Assists in the collection of data for research projects.

Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.

Participates in special projects and committee functions.

Problem Solving

Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.

Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah.

Preferred

Utah State prescriptive privilege preferred.

Certification in ACLS / BLS / NRP / ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.

To obtain licensure requires graduation from an AMA approved Physician Assistant program. Specialty experience is preferred on a position-by-position basis.

UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Preferences

The Division of General Internal Medicine of the University of Utah’s School of Medicine is looking for motivated candidates who are interested in academic medicine to enter Advance Practice Clinician Hospitalist Fellowship program. The program is designed to accommodate two fellows every 12-month, to provide the opportunity for comprehensive training in inpatient medicine, to broaden and strengthen knowledge, and to help develop an analytical and systematic approach in diagnosing and caring for hospitalized adult patients. Fellows will rotate with the infectious disease service, cardiology service, and the intensive care unit and will receive essential procedural and echocardiography training. Our goal is to help build confident providers, with effective communication skills, capable of advancing to take on full responsibility and autonomy in patient care.

To apply, every applicant will include supporting evidence of successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Certification and licensure to practice and prescribe (with active DEA license) must also be provided. Entrance to the fellowship will be granted based on CV, three letters of recommendation from the program attended, a personal interview, and criminal background check.
